> Music and Musicians Reviews and News of Capital’s Programs. Horowitz and Orchestra Give Brilliant m. feature of the concert given by the National Sym- phony Orchestra yesterday afternoon in Constitution Hall was Vladimir Horowitz's laying of the Brahms “Concerto in Flat Major.” The large audience 'was aroused to great enthusiasm and recalled him insistently with ap- plause that did not diminish in quantity or quality until the pilano movers put an end to it by moving the piano back into its secluded cor- ner. Mr. Horowitz is a virtuoso gllyer of the ighest type. He belongs to those pianists who still culti- vate a broad and strong style and whose num- bers are steadily diminishing with the increase of specialists of one kind or another. ‘The immense talent of Mr. Horo- witz overlooks all difficulties and finds a sympathetic medium in wcrks that require grandeur and brilliancy ©of execution. ‘The Brams concerto was an almost last-minute substitution for the “Emperor” concerto for which he was originally scheduled. Whether this would affect a pianist of Mr, Horowitz's ebility is difficut to say, but a certain lack of submersion in the meaning of the concerto and a restrain in the more flowing pas- sages prevented his interpretation from reaching a superlative degree. In spite of the heavier and less thankful character of the concerto itself, he brought cut all the pianist effects with an impeccable and faultless technic. He achieved & splendid volume of rich sound in the pondero! chords and a brilliant grace in lighter moments in keeping with the dignity and drzmatic color of the composition. Were these magnificent examples of virtucsity more enriched with personal convic- ent it would have satisfying perform- outstanding and es of Horow play- Viadimir Horowits. SPECIAL PURCHASE!
