B—14 ANCENT INDIAN TRAIL DISCOVERED Mounds Along Route in Northern Minnesota Hint of Chippewas. By the Associzted Press. DEER RIVER. Minn,, December 22.— The wilds of Northern Minnesota, & paradise for students of anthropology. constantly are yielding fresh traces of the early trek of the Indian and white man. Forest rangers have just discovered a well-worn pathway, now almost obscured by brush and undergrowth in the Chip- pewa National Forest, 10 miles north of here. It was unmistakably a thorough- fare of early Indians, possibly a tribe of Chippewas, who ruled the woods before Minnesota became a State. Grass mounds along the trail indi- cated that they were Indian graves of a tribe that buried their dead on top of the ground. ‘This brought recollections of the dis- covery of a Grattan township settler, ‘who found some bones while digging a cellar, believed to have been left either | ton, D. C. by the original Americans or prehistoric | white men. District’s Heroes in the World War Compiled by Sergt. L. E. Jaeckel. 17 8 recorded in the official cita- tion, Arthur L. YULE TRAPPINGS IGn_NITE; STORE BURNS, 11 HURT| Hundreds Scurry to Safety nnd; Salesgirls, Trapped, Leap Into | Fire Nets. By the Associated Press. PEORIA, Ill, December 22.—Eleven persons were hurt and burned, none se- riously, as flames last night caught fiimsy Christmas decorations in a down- town 5 and 10 cent store and spread rapidly through the building destroy- ing it. Hundreds scurried to safety. Several salesgirls, however. were trapped on the third floor and escaped by leaping into fire nets. The fire, store officials sald, was caused by an exploding electric light bulb, which sputtered fire over tissue paper decorations.
