Fl HIGH-GRADE BOND ISSUES N DEMAND Selling of Junior Rail Group Makes Market Irregular, However. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, December 22.—Pres- sure against junior railroad bonds continugd in today’s market, driving Some off them to new low prices for the year, with others only a few points above the minimum gquotations made last Spring. With a large number of these obligations now selling between 10 and 20 and paying interest of from 4 to 5', per cent a year, current yields on_them have become fantastic. The liquidation appeared to be chiefly for the account of those who wished to establish income tax losses and were selling different issues of bonds and ex- changing for others at about the same price or into a higher rating position. Conspicuous among the depressed is- sues were the Missouri Pacific J's, which declined a point to a new low level for the year: Illinois Central 4°'s, which were off 215 points; Northwes! ern 434’s, which dropped to 10, a I of a point overnight and comparing with their previous low of 8'>; New York Central 4!5's, which were down 1',; Baltimore & Ohio 4! off 1, and the Alleghany Corporation 5, which lost 1 to 1!5 points and were affected by the ‘uits “being brought against the distributors of these pyra- mided issues. It is understood that the response to the Baltimore & Ohio refunding plan, has been extraordinary and that al- ready about 78 per cent of the 415s due| next March have been stamped. This contrasts with_the slow progress made by the Nickel Plate plan, with about 82 per cent now deposited and the stand- still position in the 'Frisco capital re- organization. to which only 66 per cent of the bondholders have assented. High-grade rails and public utilities held their markets in spite of unsettle- ment elsewhere. Early in the day the American_Telephone & Telegraph 51as touched 109, a new high price for the year. In the secondary public utility list Columbia Gas & Electric 5s acted well. were heavy, Postal Telegraph & Cable 5s_dropped back to 20, there was some selling of the oil company bonds, United Drug 5s were slightly lower, as were McKesson & Robbins 51as. The looked for reaction in German dollar loans appeared today after a fort- night of advancing prices. It amounted to over a point in the Government 5! with smaller losses elsewhere. ed equslefl their previous high, above 106, while Australian and New South Wales 55 were down 1 to 113 points. Argentine issues were steadier. The demand for United States Gov- ernment bonds was once more urgent with new high prices in the Treasury 41(s and 33, and considerable strength | in the discount bonds, with the 3iis selling above 99. — GOOD TOBACCO SALES AND PRICES REPORTED| International Telephone issues; By the Associated Press GREENVILLE, Tenn, December 2 —More than 375,000 pounds of burley | tebacco were sold at three warehouses | t an estimated average of $16 per' cd.
