CHICAGO, December 22 —Santa’s pack this Christmas will be filled with toys and practical gifts—hosiery, hand- bags, shirts, lingerie, socks and ties. His sleigh will be heavy with end tables, ;dd chairs, refrigerators, even pots and ans. . ‘That's based on what folks are buying on State street, where the world's larg- est number of huge department stores are_concentrated. ‘The shopper’'s dollar on State street this holiday season buys $1.50 worth, as compared with 1929, and the balmy weather that has succeeded zero tem- peratures has brought out crowds of last-minute buyers. Outside the gayly decorated stores | movement through the milling package- | laden throng is slowed to a snail's pace. Policemen, hoarse from directing im- peded traffic, estimate that the number | of pedestrians pushing and shoving past the so-called “world’s busiest corner” —State and Madison—Is as large as last Christmas. Bargain Counters Busy. And, judging from the human sar- dine-like effect encountered in the dime stores, each shopper must be push- ing open their doors at least once. De- partment store basement stores also are | like beehives. | Merchants expect total sales to ap- | proach those of last Christmas, but | business in dollars and cents will be | smaller because prices are about a | third lower than lasgt December. From 8,000 to 10,000 men and women are employed temporarily in the dozen big department stores located within six | blocks and in the intervening smaller | stores and specialty shops. In better years State street business reaches a total of $200,000,000 a year. A fair monthly average now is $10,000,- | 000, with December ringing up $12,000,- | 000 in the cash register. These figures are based upon infor- | mation obtained from F. D. Kelly, head | of one of the department stores and im- mediate past national president of the Dry Goods Dealers of America. | This year will be a Christmas for | children. Toy sections report business very pleasing. Sales also are good in | games and bridge accessories for adults. ! Gits Are Practical. | Buying throughput the department | stores tends to the practical and gifts which are termed accessories, such as gloves, scarfs, costume jewelry, hand- bags, ties, socks, handkerchiefs. Lin- gerie sections and tollet article counters are busy. This is a year in which the housewife might expect to find a desired new skillet under the family Christmas tree. lectric percolators, toasters, all kinds of new labor-saving household devices, even washing machines, have come in for Christmas glamour. “Something to wear” apparently is a answer to that puzzling Christmas question: “What to give?” PREMIUMS PROPOSED FOR IRISH BONDS Americans Who Aided Independ-| ence Fight May Get Approxi- mately $1,000,000. e S ¥ By the Associated Press. Americans who bought bonds in 1921 to aid the Irish independence cause will receive & premium of approximately $1,000,000 under proposals President Eamon de Valera has made to the/ Irish Free State Government for action next February. Details of the steps looking to re-| payment have not been received here, | but Irish circles calculate that the premiums will amount to $1.000,000 in | round figures. This estimate is based on the fact that the bonds still held in the United States aggregate about $4,000,000. The funds were raised in the name of the Irish Republic. After the Irish | Free State was established, the money was claimed by the two factions and Free State representatives started liti- gation which impounded the cash in | the banks. In 1922 a part of the original loan amounting to $2.000,000 | was_returned to subscribers by order | of the Supreme Court of New York. | President de Valera's plan of repay- 4 ment includes either cash or stock, at | the option of the bondholders for each | dollar subscribed, as well as & premium | of abgut 25 per cent of the money ad- lvnnced 11 years ago. I HOUSE OFFIC'E BUILDING AWAITS “MOVING DAY” Outgoing Members Not to Mar ‘Walls by Rehanging Pictures After Cleaning. T By the Assoclated Press. ‘There are two reasons the walls of | {, the House Office Building are bare and | blank—economy and a moving day in| the offing. | A general cleaning was made during | the Summer recess. When the members | Teturned, they weren't allowed to hang | up their pictures of Midwestern wheat | fields, Florida Everglades, California | orange groves and New England ‘mountains. The commission in charge politely | pointed out that March 4 was going to | be the biggest moving day the House| has known in years, with “lame ducks” outward bound and a new House Office | Building to be occupied. Moreover, if | pictures were hung, they would scar and mar the walls. T Mrs.McCarty's 60c Lb. Homemade CAI;iQIES Tleties. E :-I-turm Al- and other deli- cious centers.
