By the Associated Press. HOLLAND, Mich, September 29.— Seven bank robbers, armed with sub- machine guns, twice eluded a posse of 100 men near here this morning and were reported in full flight through Western Michigan after looting the First State Bank here of between $10,- 000 and $12,000 and wounding two men. The bandits were halted temporarily near Drenthe by the posse, but broke away after opening fire with their sub- machine guns. State police and armed citizens then pursued them to a swamp near Jemestown, west of here, but again they eluded them and sped west, closely pursued. Nearly 100 shots were fired by the | fugitives in their two encounters with the posse. Hold Up Truck. Surrounded by a posse near Drenthe as they sped from the scene of the hold-up in a commandeered automobile the bandits held up a truck driven by George Boerman, a farmer, turned the truck crosswise in the highway and opened fire on the posse with sub- machine guns. Members of the posse took refuge be- hind & farm house and Kept up & run- ning fire, but the bandits dashed to their automobile and sped away. ‘They were pursued by nearly 100 men. Boerman, who was uninjured when the bandits halted his truck, said one of the men had been wounded and was bleeding freely. Have Three Submachine Guns. The bandits, said by posse members to possess at least three submachine guns, wounded Peter Lievense, chief of police, and Peter De Young, 45, a bystander. Chief Lievense was not wounded seri- ously, but physicians said De Young probably was critically injured. Ten employes and customers in the bank at the time of the hold-up werc forced to lie on the floor while the bandits seized all the available cash.
