PASTOR DENOUNCES WOODCOCK'S PROBE From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington's Theaters. His Dry Enforcement Inquiry in Kansas Is Called “Com- plete Flop.” By the Associated Press. HUTCHINSON, Kans., September 29. —Amos W. W. Woodcock, director of | prohibition, late yesterday completed a hearing here into enforcement work in Kansas, and Rev. W. C. Templeton of Dodge City, Kans., one of the witnesses, termed it “a complete flop.” Mr. Templeton and others had pro- tested Woodcock’s suspensions of Brice Armstrong and John Madden, special investigators, testifying the work of the two had been hampered by unwar- ranted interference of district head- quarters in Kansas City. | After the hearing Woodcock held an- other in private for Armstrong, accused with Madden of refusing to obey orders to report to the Kansas City office. Rev. J. N. Manninga of Wichita, as & witness, accused George Wark, admin- istrator of the Missouri-Kansas-Okla- homa-Arkansas district, and H. L. Dun- | can, chief special agent, of “gross in- | competency.” Previously Mr. Templeton expressed belief law enforcement in the district was “virtually impossible and useless” under Wark, Duncan and Sardius M. Brewster, United States district attor- ney. ‘Woodcock asserted the Prohibition Bureau “has improved a tremendous lot | “A Bill of Divorcement,” With John Barrymore, at Keith's. P BILL OF DIVORCEMENT,” which had a two-day- ahead - of - time open! yesterday at R-K. Kelth, is an unusually ef- fective film done in the best el Baurymore by John Barrymore, bringing to the screen once more Billie Burke, and evoking the new and extraordi- narily exciting resence of one atherine Hep- burn. This young and ex- tremelyunhand- some lady is one of the most sat- isfying person- alities the screen has unearthed this season. Miss Hepburn is tall and gaunt and lean. She swings her arms a Joen Crawford mask. ‘When she smiles you are unusually cheered. Whe her mouth droo) at the corners, you know that the fight is over with. She acts in this, her first screen appearance, with all the assurance of a Garbo, and all the pathos of a Cornell. She is too young to be as effective by half es either. But she has a kind of brutal way of tearing you to ribbons—and you instinctively feel in the finale of the picture, when she is sitting at *he piano with John Katherine Hiepturn. The complications which arise at this unexpected intrusion of a sup- y insane man into a home which had learned to do without him for 15 years, makes this a moving and compelling drama. It is worth its weight in gold— due to the performance of John Barrymore, who refrained from his usual eyebrow twistings—and Miss Hepburn—and one or two others— among whom, alas, Miss Burke may not be included. E. de 5. MELCHER. Gracie Barrie, Blues Singer, Held Over at Warner’s Earle. ISS GRACIE BARRIE, a young lady who stepped out modestly before the Earle curtain last Friday, after a Maxine Doyle invocation, and sang her “numbers” in a nice, healthy, unaffected manner, has been rewarded for her success by being asked to stay over for a sec- ond week at the Earle. This un- usual compliment, due to the way in which Miss Barrie has five times daily stopped the show, was given to this handsome, talented and de- mure young lady by the manage- ment of this theater—by means of taking a next week’s Philadelphia contract and ripping it quietly to bits. Miss Barrie thereby becomes a sensation overnight—since no such honor has been bestowed thusly since befcre the flood or before the Earle came into existence. So successful has been the exchange of instructors between Oxford and American universities that it is being urged in England that other universi- ties and colleges adopt the plan. While en American is teaching at Oxford, an English instructor is doing the same in one of the schools in the United States. !
