Northwest A7 SANDING DRELT REBELS BY RADI Success in Evading Marines Laid to Short-Wave Set Safe in Jungles. (Copyright, 1932, by the Consolidated Press ‘Association.) A secret short-wave radio system has alded Gen. Augustino Sandino, Nica- raguan revolutionist, in evading cap- ture by the United States Marines and in his ambushed attacks upon Marine patrols in the jungles which have taken 8 heavy toll during the last five years, according to private but authentic ad- vices received here yesterday. The reports, from a former Sandino aide new in Mexico City, state that Sandino has been using short-wave transmitters and recelvers in maintain- ing contacts with his forces. This sys- | tem also is declared to have been in- strumental not only in spotting Marine patrols, but in smuggling arms, ammu- nition and food supplies to the bandit and his main contingent. Seems Basis for Success. Radio communication seems to be the answer to Sandino's_successful stand against the Marines. In the jun- | gle and mountain fastnesses of Nica- \ragua no other means of rapid com- munication is possible. Sandino has managed to get ammu- ition and food despite the rigid em- bargoes enforced by the government | and’ the strenuous efforts of the Ma- | rines, placed in the country to main- |taln law and order and to protect | American lives and property. | Similarly, Sandino’s knowledge at | different times of the whereabouts of | Marine patrols has caused no end of trouble. " His men, on dozens of occa- | slons since he began his banditry in 927, have swooped down on groups of | Marines and Guardja Nacionale, the of- inclnl national guard of the country. | Details Are Lacking. | More than a score of Marines have lost their lives in the guerrilla warfare, victims of snipers’ bullets. Sandino's losses, however, have been far greater. Details of the type of apparatus used by Sandino are lacking. Engineers be- | lieve it is improvised short-wave equipe ment of low power, which can be trun- | dled about. "A short.wave station of | only & few watts, they said, can trans- | mit in code several hundred miles dur- | ing the night. 'DRESS SALON FOR MEN IS OPENED IN LONDON | Dressmaker Installs Bar to Give | Males Same Treatment Women Get at Couturiers, | | LONDON, September 17 (NAN.A.).— The average man, though he would never own it, is just as interested .in | being fashionably dressed as the av- | erage woman, and now he is to have | a dress salon of his own. It will be opened shortly in the West End and & cocktail bar will be permanently in- stalled. The originator of the idea, a Bruton street dressmaker, thinks that men are not always properly catered for by | their tailors. “I want to introduce new materials for sports, for one thing,” he says. “And 11 am convinced that holiday cruises | need a special outfit which a man | cannot get at an ordinary tailor’s. | Trousers made of crash is one idea |of mine and ordinary house flannel for golf coats which have plenty of J“Iflve" about the shoulders is another. | Also (and wives, I am sure, will be | glad to hear this), I am making my | dressing gowns with cravats, so that a | bare throat at breakfast need no longer be a cause for divorce!” Several well known young men | about town have offered to wear the | new “creations” and accessories at the | dress shows which will take place twice |a week. No doubt they will revel in | the dark prune dinner jackets that are |to be introduced! One of these, for wear at home, is made of prune velvet, | with a watered-silk wastcoat to match. | ~ Another Autumn style for the smart man is to have the clasps and buckles of his braces made of goid. SPEED TRIAL POSTPONED | UNTIL TUESDAY MORNING | Gar Wood Delayed by Timing Equipment—Will Make Un- official Run Today. | By the Assoctated Press. ALGONAC, Mich, September 17.— | Gar Wood's trial against the l-mile speedboat record with his Miss America | X was postponed this morning after nearly two hours of delay, due to diffi- |culty in setting up communication equipment necessary to timing the at- tempt. | “Wood said that because of the great gathering of spectators who had come to Algonac to watch the run, he would put on an exhibition spurt, without the | official timing. He said he would try to | break the world's record at 7 a.m. next y. He specifically requested the timers ot to clock his exhibition run today. | " "The record Wood seeks to better | 119.75_miles an hour established by | Kaye Done on Loch Lomond, Scotland, | July 18. The record previously had been recorded as 119.81, but members of the International Racing Commission who had charge of the Harmsworth races here a fortnight ago said a re- check showed it to be 119.75.
