COREY FORD SHONS DUAL PERSONALIY Brilliant Young +|o||ywood Writer Sometimes Is “John i Riddell.” By the Associated Press. HOLLYWOOD, July 13.—Corey Ford, | who may or may not be John Riddell to you, will not be John Riddell to the screen. Bord, brilliant young writer here for his first stab at contract writing for the screen, is a literary dual person- ! ality, using the name Riddell for his essays in bitingly satirical literary arody. Still trying to recover from his hec- tic initiation to a Hollywood studio—a reception that might have been taken from “once in a lifetime"—Ford sur- mounted his temporary bewilderment to make a serfous declaration of his intentions toward Hollywood. “I'm really going to try to learn how to write screen humor,” he said. of the printed page. No, I don't be- lieve there's any place for parody in pictures, certainly not for literary parody. Screen humor has to be the humor of people” Resembles Montgomery. Ford, unlike many funny men of {letters, is a wit off paper, tco. He is {a modified, slightly older version (he |is 30) of Robert Montgomery, the | screen star. There is even a slight resemblance. Ford is wittier, as a pro- fessional should be. Ford's first day in the studio forms a story that is convulsing the town. He walked into his office to find them methodically removing all its furniture. They took everything out except the chair he was in and his typewriter, and were about to go for those when, in panic, he reached for the telephone. “Then a sleepy voice told me my phone was disconnected!” Ford tells. “Well, after a while I got my furniture back, and since then they've kept bringing in more. Must be a gag. But { I've been going around in circles. Ill get used to it, I suppose.” not himself, was doing the rotating act, and that joining .the merry-go-round might restore his sense of normalcy, Ford acquiesced. “Perhaps if I develop a few eccentrici- ties I'll be all right.” he said. “Mayvbe it 1 put maple sirup on my poached eggs—" Native of New Hampshire. I still have | absolute confidence in my bullet-proof vest. The concern that advised the com- mission that it had discontinued so- | liciting pupils is located in Los Angeles. The step was taken, it was said, after a Federal agent had arrested a rep- | resentative of another agency there, en- | gaged in the same business on a charge of misrepresentation. Thus far, 40 periodicals and 100 newspapers have advised the commis- sion they have barred advertising of these coaching courses from their col- umns. Regular 23¢ PLAN EXCAVATING ON NEW PARKWAY Rock Creek-Potomac Road Work Will Start This Fall. The next step in improving the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway will be taken in the Fall, according to Lieut. Col. U. 8. Grant, 3d, director of Public Buildings and Public Parks, who sald excavating then would be undertaken in the valley between P street and Penn- sylvania avenue. Procuring less than half the funds necessary for this year's work from Congress, Col. Grant will be able to accomplish only part of the program mapped out during the current fiscal year. The excavated earth will be placed south of Pennsylvania avenue to K strect, where the present improvément ends in that area. At present, con- struction of a new bridge across Rock Creek is underway at L street, but considerable filling in of earth will be | necessary in order to lay the founda- || tion for the new roadway that will link the parkway drive with Pennsylvania averue and carry it under the Permsyl- | vania Avenue and M Street Bridges. The present plan is to take the earth | excavated from farther up the valley | and truck it down to the vicinity of | } the bridge at L street. Temporary Road Considered. Col. Grant expects that this filled-in land will be permitted to settle during the Winter, and it is possible that a temporary road may be comssucted if there are sufficient funds on h&nd by next Spring. Construction of a new bridge over Rock Creek valley at P street by the | District Government is a factor in the | improvement of the parkway at that point. Provision for the P street bridge was_eliminated from the District ap- prl(l)lprlnlk)n bill, so that improvement = sufficient funds. | Although the law directed that $182.- | 006 might be spent for improvement in the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway this fiscal year, this item has been slashed. through necessity for economy, to $82,000 Open to P Street. It is now possible to drive from the East-West Highway in Montgomery County, Md., down through Rock Creek | Valley on improved roads as far South | as P street. The Rock Creek and Poto- mac Parkway has been improved south- ward from K street to near the Lincoln | Memorial. It will be two or three years more now before the parkway can be improved between P street and Penn- | sylvania avenue, according to present indications PRIVATE | LANDS SEIZED TRUCKEE, Calll.
