Some said he had complained of illness, others did not hear him say he was sick O Maillefert's head and feet stuck out, when he was placed in the barrel without clothing, his fellow prisoners’ tostified. During the day he walked about in the tarel and was fed one piece of bread and some water. At night he was placed, barrel and all, inside the sweat box. Gnawed His Way Out. Next morning Maillefert, still in the barrel, was released from the sweat box. No one seemed to remember whether | he was given food. The vouth gnawed his way out of the barrel and escaped. He ran naked through the woods, but was captured by guards with blood- hounds. The “gunmen” all testified he ap- peared weak, hardly able to stand and said he lay on the ground while th stocks were constructed about it The convicts all told how Capt Courson had placed the heavy chain about his neck, aided by Higginbotham. The chain was fixed over two rafters in_the sweat box by a trusty.
