FINANCIAL. ANDERSONTO ALK ATLUNCHEON HERE = D. C. Underwriters’ Associa- “tion Will Hear Baltimorean Next Thursday. BY EDWARD C. STONE. E. L. Anderson, president of the Bal- timore Assoclation of Life Underwriters, will be the guést speaker at the monthly luncheon of the District of Columbia Life Underwriters’ Association, accord- ing to announcement today by David S. Bethune, the president. The meeting will be held at the Washington Hotel Thursday, beginning at 12:30. Mr. Awderson is one of the most successful insurance men in Baltimore. He will speak on “Organize and Succeed in 1932.” He will also report on the elaborate plans being made for the joint sales conference of the two associations, to be held this year in the Monumental - g-esldent Bethune reports that there are now 198 members in the local as- sociation, unusual interest being shown in the monthly gatherings, ‘The reports on “Life Insurance day,” observed in January, which have just been made for the whole country, reveal the most favorable result.s in the way of new insurance. “Positively thrilling” was the way one agent described the results of the drive as brought out in the na- tional returns. $296,848,360 in Loan Requests. Loans ‘ aggregating $296,848,360 have been requested of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation by 40 railroads to date, an unofficial tabulation of appli- cations shows. Up to March 1, the Interstate Commerce Commission had approved advances of $53,647,175 to 14 carriers. The Pennsylvania request for $55,- 000,000 is the largest to date and the only one which proposes to use the funds entirely (or additions and bet- term:ntl to its line. Gulf & Ship Islend Railrosd has ukzd Interstate Commerce Commis- al for a loan of $694,350 and m‘ Central for a loan of $25,- Tel, & Tel. Dividend Outlook. As the year progresses, it becomes in- creasingly apparent that the American Telephone dividend rate of $9 annually will be maintained with little if any dipping into cash reserves, says the New York Tribune. Operating expenses have been lowered considerably and the New York Telephone Co. recently put into effect a shorter month for most of its employes, one or more Saturdays being occasions for extensive lay-offs. Besides earnings, American Telephone has its large cash reserve totaling $289,- 000,000 from which to pay dividends. The company also can call in undis- tributed earnings from its subsidiaries which have been increasing in years of good business and are ready for use by the parent'company. The dividend was earned by a 5-cent margin in 1931. If business continues the same in 1932 and earnings approximate the 1931 level, the Tribune adds, it is safe to assume that the present dividend rate will be maintained. Year's A. & P. Sales Estimated. ‘With total sales for the fiscal year ending February 27,"estimated at $1,- 008,000,000, the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. tops the list of volume of business recorded for last year. in tons, the February Yy sales of the corporation were estimated at 412,767, Average weekly tonnage sales for Febsuary were 103,192. Reporting to the Interstate Com- merce cammnslm the Norfolk & ‘Western Railway Co. shows current sets of $11, 108 822 as of January 1932, compared with $14,258,230 at Lbe end of January, 1931, while current lia- bilities were $3,565,619, against $4,689,- 538 a year ago. Investments in stocks and bonds, etc., other than those of af- filiated companies, amounted to $35,- 016,276 against $44,149,597 at the end of January, 1931, and the funded debt maturing within the next six months was $3,555,000 against $8,505,000 in the preceding year. The Interstate Commerce Commission has been asked by the receivers of the Florida East Coast Raflway for ap- proval of a loan of $918,375 for a three- year period from the tion, in .order to interest/ on mfipx‘:z equipment Today's Trading on Exchange. Bonds were in the best demand when mGufi.ufluA,mhllDthu- fer being par. - As these bonds mature in 1933 quite a good mnny holders are parting with them at and buying other bonds which the; believe have a good opportunity of ld- vancing. Heard in Financial District. Although the special anti-hoarding drive in Washington has been conclud- ed, local bankers expect a good many more requests for the “baby bonds,” as well as the redgpodwu of funds in savings accounts Unusual interest was manifested in the local New York Stock Exchange offices in the opening of Kreuger & ‘Toll stock following the death of: the: “match king.” It was after 10:30 be- fore it appeared on the translux, off ‘over $3 a share.
