Cotton Hit by War fighting at Shanghai has "had a serious effect upon the cotton shippers of the United States, who have been faced with a market cut 90 per cent in its consumption of the material Shanghai consumes about 50 per cent of the cotton shipped to China, and the latest report indicated that only nine mills were in operation, one of which was British, and the others native. Because of this lack of con- sumption iIn the face of the steady arrival of shipments, & great over-supply has been re- ceived, which has filled all sortage facilities to over-capacity. So serious has the situation become, in- surance agencies are charging as much as 5 per cent a month for coverage on the stored supplies. Reducing Drugs Bring Warning A NEW warning has been issued by the De- partment of Agriculture against so-called fat reducers. The majority of them, in the opinion of Dz. F. J <Cullen, chief of the divi- sion of drug cantrol, are based either on thy- roid extract or laxative drugs. The effect of either, if used without the advice and obser- vation of a physician, is highly dangerous. The thyroid extract is considered especially dangerous, as it is intended for treatment of certain particular cases affected by a defective thyroid. The improper use might easily cause a permanent, harmful condition upon & user not affected by thyroid trouble. Many of the laxative reducers have been found to contain polk root, a poisonous drug. It will cause a loss of weight in many persons, but through the development of conditions likely to cause a permanent illness of the digestive tract. The polk weed has not only a cathartic effect, according to Dr. Cullen, but in addition causes an irritation of the intes- tine which lessens the absorption of food and causes discomfort and loss of appetite. Con- stant use of reducers of this type i held likely to bring about chronic inflammation of the stomach, with permanent loss of health. ‘The surplus poundage acquired through the pleasurable means of “good eating” exact a heavy toll of self-denial on the part of the person sporting the weight. Short cuts by means of medicinal cures should be taken only on the advice and direction of authori- ties on medicine, the Federal expert warns. Locusts’17-Year Visits Real THE 17-year locusts, as the insect known to science as the cicada is called, appears in the North more often than every 17 years, but this is due to the fact that there are sev- eral cycles of them in existence. The cicad actually require 17 years to mature from the egg stage to the final stage of the full-grown insect. In the South the period is about four years shorter. The adults lay the eggs in slits in the bark When the 17 years have been accomplished, they work to the surface, and their shell coating splits, permitting the full-grown inseot to emerge.
