FINANCIAL. CURB-SHARES WIN SUPPORT AT CLOSE Selling Checked, With Recov- eries Noted in Public Utili- ties Group. BY JOHN L. COOLEY, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, March 12.—The curb market took on a somewhat brighter complexion in a quiet week end ses- sion today. Price changes were largely limited to minor fractions, but the selling which came into the Electric Bond & Share group and other sections of the list yesterday was checked, and small re- coveries appeared here and there. The closing tone was steady to firm. Electric Bond & Share finished a | fraction higher, apparently reflecting short covering. It was pointed out in brokerage circles that there has ap- | parently been some seling based on the erroneous belief that the company has omitted its preferred dividends. Ordering of these payments has merely been deferred pending approval of the recapitalization plan. American Gas & Electric was also up a fraction, and Commonwealth Edison was firm. Such issues as Middle West Utilities, United Light “A,” and Utili- ties Power & Light were barely changed. Ofig were somewhat inclined to firm- ness. The new Consolidated Oil stock was fairly active, rising a fraction, as did Gulf. Indiana and Citles Service about steady. ‘e'Ir':Ael’e was little activity in the in- dustrials. The Ford issues were traded at steady prices. Increase in Plant Schedule. NEW YORK, March 12 (#)—Dow, Jones & Co. says Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co.'s operations for the coming week are estimated at 22 per cent of capacity, up 1 point from the current rate. - SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Copyright, 1932, Standar: 'COTTON VALUES RISE AFTER EARLY LOSSES Trade Buying and Covering Move- ment Prove Props to Sag- ging Market. a tatistics Co.) By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 12—An early decline in cotton under some Southern selling and liquidation inspired by rela- tively easy Liverpool cables was followed by rallies on trade buying and covering. May contracts, after selling off to 6.96, rallied to 6.99 and closed at 6.98, with the general market closing steady at net declines of 1 to 2 points. ‘ The opening was steady at a decline of 1 to 4 points, with the active months selling about 3 to 5 points net lower during the early trading. The decline to 6.96 for May and 7.33 for October appeared to meet some trade buying limits, however, and after the early of- ferings had been absorbed prices became steadier. ‘There was further Southern selling and some commission house liquidation, but it was readily absorbed. Closing quotations were within a point or two of the best. Reports of continued cold weather in the South appeared to have little effect on the market. Liverpool cables attributed the de- cline in that market to local and for- eign liquidation influence by the steadier sterling, and reported freer buying of comm yarns by British home trade and India. The amount of cotton reported on shipboard at the end of the week was estimated at 221,000 bales, against 116,000 last year and 135,000 two years ago. The weekly weather forecast was for generally fair weather, with rising temperatures during the first part of the week, with prospects for probable showers and colder toward the end of the period.
