Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 1—The voca- tion of air hostess is a year old. Begun as an experiment by one American air line, it now occupies a permanent place in air transportation. Although the sponsors of the idea are the only ones using women exclusively as couriers on planes, other companies are considering the venture and several have employed women as hostesses at terminals. AIr line officials here and abroad have watched the results obtained by Eastern Air Transport with the experiment, and | the company’s continuation after a | year’s tryout may result in employment of hostesses on planes of other lines. ‘Women Making Inroads. The attention focused on the air hostesses has brought about a study of woman's place in the air gransport pic- ture. It has resulted in the hiring of young women in traffic jobs and has re- sulted in the creation of new posts in the air transportation picture. For ex- ample, some air lines now have women in charge of convention desks, it being their jobs to get in touch with women or men who are going o a convention in some city served by their air line and to tell of the service offered by plane. Women are becoming more and more active in the air picture. Several are traffic managers, at least one is a vice | president of one of the bigger lines and has been active in her position. Getting back to the air hostess, nearly every big line in the United States serves food on its planes, gnd this food is prepared in most cases by women. Severa! lines have couriers, whose sole job is to make the passengers com- fortable, but most lines use the co-pilots for the dual role of co-pilot and courier. Fly Many Miles. During the year the seven air host- | esses employed by Eastern Air Trans- port have flown an average of 97,142 miles each. The three senior hostesses actually have covered more than 100,000 miles each during the year. The senior flying nostesses are Miss Beulah Unruh, who flew 138,000 miles during the year: Miss Madeline Moon, who flew 118,000 miles, and Miss Marion Cook, who traveled 108,600 miles. Miss Unruh is a pilot, holding & limited commercial license, and when ‘great powers of the past ages, STAR, WASHINGTON, TODAY'S AMUSEMENTS. Belasco—"The Gondoliers,” at 8:20 pm.
