NEW YORK, March 1.—The Police Gazette, as much a part of yesterday's barber shop as the squirt bottle, has failed to respond to the massage of its creditors. It lies today in a court of bankruptcy, as dead as clipped hair on the linoleumed floor. When pictures of ladies in tights were considered daring and photo- graphs of mustachioed pugilists with massive arms folded proudly across enormous chests _aroused great reader enthusiasm the Police Gazette had its heyday. Now that tights are antique and mustaches little more than hairy breves accenting masculine lips, pink-papered periodical has found itself without & sufficient following. Last year, its creditors claim, the Police Gazette took in only $100.000, with expenses $40,000 greater. Con- ferences of creditors failed of satisfac- tory conclusions. Yesterday the Irving Trust Co. was appointed receiver in bankruptcy. The magazine, when taking the trade at top stride, was considered somewhat daring, with its pictures of statuesque stage sirens given to substantial con- tours; yet from its beginning it was the ! insistence of the Richard K. Fox Pub- lishing Co. (its publishers) that the Police Gazette be kept clean in text and picture. In this endeavor the publishers were successful. Scandal and malicious gos- sip were alien to its pale pink pages. Innuendo was not tolerated. The only excuse for a prevalent belief that the magazine was overemphatic in its appeal were the pictured beauties of burlesque, postured in attire which—in the more faraway places—was Te- garded as extremely deshabille. Times today are different, but there fully corseted figure of a lady who | seemed to have been poured into a | perfect mold. NEW YORK, March 1.—A China- town mystery of 20 yea'rs‘ standing was revived yesterday. It dealt with an attempt to assassi- nate Mock Sei Wing, national president of the Hip Sing Tong, last night, in a murky, misty street in the heart of the Newark, N. J, Chinatown. A bullet passed through the fleshy part of Mock's Known as “Mock Duck” to Tong men, police believe Mock Sel is none other than the almost legendary Tong leader of a generation ago, Mock Duck, lvm from New York: in 912. ‘The Mock Duck, who com- bined Oriental wiles with Occidental di- rectness, came to New York in the erwly nineties from San Francisco, a fat, round-faced young man with a genius for crganization. At that time the On Leong Tong ruled New York's Chinatown. Waved away by the ruling Tong, Mock Duck went to an American minister and informed him of the “wickedness” of the On Leongs. The On Leongs were driven out and the Hip Sings moved in. A Tong war flared up and about 20 lives were lost before a truce was effected in 1906. 3 Mock Duck reigned supreme for a time. The courts took away his adopted daughter, his house was set afire three times, his gambling establishments were ralded and he was arrested for numer- ous Chinese killings. In 1012 he disappeared, at least as far as Tongs were concerned. He became a business man, first in one city, then in another. At one time he was sald to have died. The wounded Chinese speak English.
