CITIZENS PROTEST | BRIDGE AS UNSAFE Rhode Island Avenue Group Acts on Queens Chapel Road Span. Complaint that the new Queens Chapel Road Bridge over the Balti- more & Ohid railroad tracks is both unsightly and unsafe was made by members of the Rhode Island Avenue Citizens’ Association at their meeting in_Sherwood Church Hall last night. It was claimed that the bridge lacked sufficlent guard-rail protection. The complaint was referred to the Commit- | tee on Streets and Sidewalks The same committee was instructed to urge the grading of Evarts street | from Seventeenth to Twentieth streets. | L. M. Clarke reported the work of im- | proving Langdon Park had been begun. | Brisco» Adams, a professor at Cornell | University and cne of th> early presi- dents of the association, and all other non-resident presidents were formally invited to attend the association's meet- ing June 28, and be present at the com- munity's Bicentennial celcbration of home-coming day, July 4. Italian Artists at Jewish Community Center. WO Italian artists, Vittoria de Andreis and Giuseppe Bruno, gave a very interesting and lively concert last evening in the Jewish Community Cen- ter. The genial spirit of the occa- sion was partly due to the enthusi- astic audience, who could not wait for the last chord of most of the arias before thundering their ep- plause (and who clapped for Mme. de Andreis in her encore of “Sole Mio” at the end of the first verse, u n f ortunately causing her to omit the sec- ond). The ob- ject and cause of their joy was, of course, the artists them,- selves, who gave an excellent per{ormance, both in solos and duets. Mr. Bruno al- most skipped onto the stage to sing the first number, the gay “Largo &l Factotum,” from Ros- sini's “Barber of Seville.” His crisp Tecitative and “Figaro. Figaro.” came out well. Only an Italian can say 5o many sylldbles clearly in one breath. Verdi's “Eri Tu,” from the “Masked Ball," gave him an op- portunity for full, sustained tone. Meyerbeer’s aria from fricanc™ was properly dramatic, yet perhaps M. Bruno's most enjoyable songs were two Neapolitan oncs. “Torna a Surriento” and “Stlenzio Cantatore,” sung with a mellow, sensuous voice The first public performances of two charming songs by & Washing- ton composer, Romeo Guaral were featured on the program. ‘R member” was sung by the baritone, and “Imploration™ by the soprano. The composer himself” was at the piano. Mme. de Andrels won the favor of her audience immediately by her simplicity and genuine feeling in the well known “Connais tu lc Pays.” from “Mignon.” Puccini's aria, “Michiamano Mimi." from “Boheme."” was appropriately shy and hesitant. Mme. de Andrels handled her voice well especially in changing from a Giuseppe Bruno. | tences. Despite slightly disturbing gestures, Elizabeth Gardner Coombs played excellent accompaniments for both artists. D.C.
