B—6 NEW JERSEY GIRDS TO LEAD WET FIGHT 35 Delegates Prepare to | Press Plank at G. 0. P. | Convention. The New Jersey delegation to the Re- publican National Convention, 35 in number, will form a nucleus and, if necessary, lead the fight for the adop- tion of a plank in the Republican plat- form urging modification, if not repeal, of national préhibition, it was disclosed | today. Such a program was agreed to by Senators Kean and Barbour of New Jersey and Ambassador Walter Edge, former Senator. at a dinner here. The Republican State Committee is to meet in New Jersey February 26. At that meeting the committee will draft a comparatively brief platform declara- | whose properties, as dt | who have e: BY THOMAS R. HENRY. Specimens of a plant containing an obscure chemical substance which al- legedly enables human beings to see in the dark and which invests the whole world before the eyes in a strange bluish color, have just been secured by the Smithsonian Institution. This is the first importation into the United States of * this plant, which grows in Southeastern Columbia, and bed by those xperimented with it and watched its effects on natives and ani- mals, surpass anything attributed to the mythical plants of folklore. It was received the Smithsonian as part of a large collections of Colom- bian plants sent by & collaborator with the institution, Guillermo Klug of tion for the State and select a list of delegates to the national convention. That platform will tackle the prohibi- tion issue, demanding repeal or modi- fication, or both, and also other public problems. Platform to Be Wet. The prediction was made that the Btate platform declaration would be wet and that the delegation to the national | convention would go to Chicago pre- pared to do its utmost to have written into the national platform a similar wet declaration. There was no_intimation from Sen- mtor Kean or others who attended the conference last night that their pro- gram had the sanction of Presidert| MHoover. The New Jersey Republicans, | Tealizing that the sentimen: in_their | State is strongly against prohibit have determined to pro themsel no matter what the Republican na- tional platform may contain in regard to_prohibition. Senator Kean said, however, he had no doubt that the New Jersey delegation would support President Hoover for re- nomination. Hopes Other States Will Follow. The New Jersey Senator said he hoped that other State delegations to the Republican National Convention, 3ike that of Massachusetts, would fol- Jow a similar course on the prohibi- tion issue. He declared that if enough State delegations would declarz for some kind of modification or repeal of the eighteenth amendment there would be no question that the Republican na- tional platform would carry plank. He mentioned as possil porters of a wet plank delegatiol ‘Washington, California 7 consin. Michigan, Iilinois, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jerse hode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. With such an array, he d, there would be a chance for a modification plank. VIRGINIA FIRM GETS. PEARL HARBOR CONTRACT Will Build $148,000 Engine and Aircraft Overhaul Shop in Hawaiian Islands. The Smithsonian Institution, of course, cannot vouch for the weird physiological and psychological effects attributed to the plant extract. Its in- terest is primarily in the botanical re- lationships. If the plant actually has the properties attributed to it by some South American observers, it might have a limited use in medicine and an even more noteworthy use in the study of the nature of human vision.
