rA_14 THE EVENING DR. LUNDELL GETS CHEMISTRY AWARD Study of Mysterious Enzymes Described by Dr. Balls to | American Society. A new laboratory has just been es- tablished here by the Agriculture De- partment for the investigation of scores of mysterious chemical substances feund only in living crganisms, which are basic factors in almost all the fore th the Washington br can Chemica! In this way we are able to tell something of how an enzyme Wworl We can make many curious derivatives of the amino acids, the building stones of the proteins, and study the effects of the enzymes upor them. “The preblem is to explain why some of the substances which do not occur naturally are decomposed by enzymes, while others very like them are not. It depends on how the atoms are ar- ranged in the molecule, and since the arrangement of the atoms affects polarized light when it is passed through a substance, there is a relation between the behavior to polarized light and the enzymes. Theory Developed. “We have developed a theory to ex- plain why the enzyme is affected by variations in the arrangement of the atcms. Certain atomic arrangements are more reactive than others, and the are those which combine c and then split apart. Other substances have been found which combire but are not afterwards split, so that we can tell something about what sort of a combination it is. “The chemical nature of ihe enzymes remains ahnost unknown. Three have been crystallized, w1l by Americans. The crystals are proteins, but we do not know enough about the proteins to tell how these enzymes work. Lately, in | the case of two of them, peroxidase and catalase, the active substance has : been shown to be related to hemin, the red-colored substance of the blood, which contains iron. One of the di- gestive enzymes has been shown to contain phosphorus, which it gives off > acid when it is posed. The enzyme is an orgs pound containing phosphoric PLAN CARD PARTY Funds to Be Used to Entertain Visiting School Principals.
