'RETIREMENT OF OLIVER | Dentists to Petition Congress and PAPER DESCRIBES WASHINGTON RITES Ulster County, N. Y., Gazette of January 4, 1800, Tells of General’s Funeral. The pomp and sorrow which marked : the funeral of Gen. George Washing- ton are described in a “current news” dispatch in the Ulster County (N. Y.) Gazette of January 4, 1800, an original copy of which is possessed by E. K. Schleichert, 2115 F_street. After depicting the scene of the funeral at Mount Vernon, the writer, who dates his account “George Town, Dec. 20, 1799,” six days after Wash- ington's death, says: “Between three and four o'clock, the sound of artillery from a vessel in the river, firing minute guns, awoke afresh our solemn sorrow—the corps was re- moved—a band of music with mourn- ful melody melted the soul into all the tenderness of woe. Order of Procession. “The procession was formed and moved on in the following order: Cavalry, Infantry, Guard (with arms Teversed), music, clergy; the general's horse, with his saddle, holsters and pistols; the corpse, with pallbearers, Cols. Sims, Ramsay, Payne, on the left side, and Gilpin, Marsteller and Little, on ' the right: mourners, brethren and citizens. “When the procession had arrived at the bottom of the elevated lawn, on the bank of the Potomac, where the family vault is placed, the Cavalry halted, the Infantry marched toward the Mount and formed their lines— the ‘clergy, the Masonic brothers and the citizens descended to the vault, and the funeral service of the church was performed. The firing was repeated from the vessel in the river, and the sounds echoed from the woods and hills around. “Three general discharges from the infantry—the cavalry and 11 pieces of artillery, which lined the banks of the Potomac back of the Vault, paid the last tribute to the entombed Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States and the departed Hero.” Also printed in the mourning-bor- dered columns df the Gazette is the Senate's message to President Adams regretting Washington's death. “Permit us, sir,” the Senate writes, “to mingle our tears with yours; on this occasion it is manly to weep. Adams Expresses Regret. Adams in reply says, “I feel myself alone, bereaved of my last brother; yet I derive strong consolation from the unanimous disposition which appears in all ages and classes, to mingle their sorrows with mine, on this common calamity to the world.” At the same time the House of Rep- resentatives adopted resolutions on Washington's death. The members agreed to wear black during the ses- sion, to co-operate with a joint Senate Committee in paying tribute to the deceased patriot. The Speaker of the House waited on the President and ex- pressed to him the sorrow of the Rep- resentatives, and the President replied in kind. “The latest news from Londan,” ex- | tracted from London papers of October 20, which had arrived just in time to make the January 4 edition of the Ga- zette, includes reports of the battle of Zurich, the return of “Bounaparte and Berthier” to France from the banks of the Nile, and accounts of various mili- tary engagements in Holland, on the Rhine and elsewhere.
