By the Associated Press. LITTLE ROCK, Ark, November 2T. —President Hoover, who was intimate- ly connected with drought relief work in Arkansas last year and with flood relief ¢n 1927, participated yesterday in a Thanksgiving celebration of the State's “remarkable recovery.” Through the voice of his personal friend, Harvey Couch, who was as- sociated with him in the flood relief work, the President expresssd to the people of the State his “appreciation for this exemplification of the spirit of our people.” Mr. Hoover's message, together with one from Walter S. Gifford, chairman of the President’s National Organiza- tion for Unemployment Relief, was read by Mr. Couch during a half-hour ra- dio broadcast, which was a feature of the State-wide Thanksgiving observ- ance. The Arkansas Advisory Com- mittee of the National Relief Organ- ization, of which Mr. Couch is chair- man; was in charge of the program. State Is Blessed. “The recovery of Arkansas from the effects of the drought during 1930, which had followed floods in 1927, ist evidence of the courage and energy of the people and of the blessings of the Almighty Providence,” said the mes- sage_ from President Hoover, who, as chaifman of the American Red Cross and as flood relief director in 1927 un- der appointment of President Coolidge, gained first-hand information regard- ing the severity of both disasters. “Reports show that Arkansas has been fortunate indeed. Weather conditions have been most favorable. Its harvest is the largest and most varied in years. Larders that were empty last year are now filled almost to overflowing. The people have enjoyed immunity from dis- ease and pestilence. Expresses Appreciation. “It is not difficult for one to under- stand why its people, rememberiug that the first Thanksgiving centered about a harvest following a period of hardship and near famine, have come to realize its true significance; “Please convey my appreciation for this exemplification of the spirit of our people to the ehajrman of the State committee having charge of the Thanks- giving observance, as well as to the min- é,"m' churches and other organiza- Mr. Gifford expressed his “admiration for the diligence and fortitude they (the people of Arkansas) exerci in themselves above the trials and tribu- lations of & year ago.” h,gueé radl‘o n:ht:om lnlAmrhnns were ooped up for the special broadeast.
