THEATER 0 HELP GY'S WOODVARD School Children to Be Dis- | [ | missed Early in Move to Aid Unemployed. Every neighborhood movie in Wash- ington will give matinees today, and three downtown theaters will present special midnight shows tonight to raise funds to aid the unemployed. In addi- tion, four other downtown movies will give special midnight performances Saturday. With the actors, stage hands, ushers end other employes of the theaters do- nating their services, the District Un- employment Committee hopes to raise $15,000. The money will be devoted to the maintenance of the new municipal ‘wood yard, according to George Adams, executive secretary of the committee. Public school children will be dis- | missed 15 minutes earlier than usual | today, to give them an opportunity to | attend the matinees, Adams said. { Tonight's midnight shows, he con- | tinued, will be given at 11:15 o'clock | at the Earle, Fox and Palace Theaters. At the same time the Howard Theater will present a special performance for colored movie-goers, Saturday’s midnight shows will be given by the Metropolitan, R-K-O | Keith's, Columbia and Rialto Theaters. The admission price at tonight's per- formances will be 60 cents, while Sat- urday’s will be 10 cents less. Special acts will be added to the usual pro- grams. Tickets for the various shows are be- ing sold by members of the Junior League, the Jewish Community Center | and the District Fire Department. The firemen, Adams said, have sold approxi- | mately 6,000 tickets. | The woodyard, located on the George | Washington Memorial site, on Consti- tution avenue between Sixth and Sev- enth streets, gives unemployed tran- slents a chance to earn as much as $1 8 day at the rate of 25 cents an hour. | “With the co-operation of the Police Department, we hope, through the | woodyard, torid the Capital of its street | beggars and panhandlers,” Adams de- | clared. “We hope to develop it into something so fine that it will be copied by cities in all parts of the country.” | Some of the wood, he added, will pe | of the special session of the Legisl Prettiest WINS BEAUTY HONORS AT LOUISIANA TECH. : [ MISS DOROTHY HARRELL Of Ruston, La., was termed the most beautiful girl at Louisiana Tech when she polled the greatest number of votes over 18 other girls nominated for the honor. —A. NOVEMBER 18, 1931, HEAVY SEASDELAY RECOVRYOF E0LD Divers Reach $5,000,000 Cargo 400 Feet From | Deck of Artiglio. | By the Assoclated Press. | BREST, France, November 18.—| Heavy seas made it impossible today | for divers to take any of the $5,000,000 in gold from the hulk of the sunken liner Egypt, off the coast not far from | here, and salvage operations which have | been’ going on for several months were interrupted until the weather improves. | Operations by the Italian steamer Artiglio IT were near success When a diver yesterday entered the bullion room | of the Egypt, which was rammed and | sunk off the French coast by a cargo | stramer in 1922 | The diver was lowsred 400 feet from | the deck of the/Artiglio through a hole that had been cut into thetreasure chamber. It was very dark there, but | he was able to sce a wood case in a corner and reported that the room seemed to be filled to within two feet of its ceiling. If there was sufficient light in the deep, efforts to raise at least a few of the ingots would be made now, the divers said. But the stormy season was | 00 far advanced to make recovery of | all the gold this year seem likely. | Winds and vaves interrupt® the divers several times in recent months as they ripped a hole through the| Egypt's deck and siowly cut their way to the fortune. A trdgedy ended efforts of the first Artiglio to reach the gold. It was blown to bits by an explosion of tons of gun- cotton in another sunken hulk, the American freighter Florence H., which went down with a cargo of munitions during the World War. Twelve of the crew of 19 perished. Finding of a coin bearing the date 1561 has started a treasure hunt in Islay, Scotland, according to Glasgow reports.
