WOMAN'’S PAGE. BEDTIME STORIES % Peter in Love Again. QB carthibelow in heaven sbove. e greatest thing of all 1s love, As Peter Rabbit and little Mrs. Peter made their way home from the Old Pasture to the dear old Brmr-pau:h. Peter had little to say. He had had a rude awakening when he discovel that_the pretty young Rabbit in ©Old Pasture with whom he had !lnc!ed 1f in love had all the time been in love with another and had simply been amusing herself with him. It had hurt his self-esteem and it had shown him how silly he had been. Also, it had shown him right then and there that he wasn't really in love with her t all. “She is just a foolish young thing,” \m“ BACK IN THE DEAR OLD BRIAR- PATCH FETER HAD TIME FOR A LOT OF THINKING. thought hdlas he hopped along on his way home. “Too young to have any real sense. I don't see what possessed me. It must have been the moonlight and her eyes. Yes, sir, that was it. I'm glad Fuzzy didn't find out that I had been coming over to see her.” Peter always called Mrs. Peter Fuazy, for when he first met her her name was | pa Miss Fuzzytail. “I§ was lucky for me,” he continued, *“that Fuzzy didn't find me talking to the silly young thing. She wouldn't have understood. Well, it is all over now, and what she doesn’t know won't hurt her.” And then a doubt crept into Peter's mind: How much did Fuzzy know? It was queer that she should have taken it into her head to visit the Old Pasture alone and without saying any- thing to him. And it was queer that she hadn't seemed to be the least bit surprised when he had appeared and asked her to take a walk, supposing all the time that it was that silly young Rabbit who was waiting in that bram- ble-tangle for him. Come to think of it, it was queer that Fuzzy happened to be in that particular bramble-tangle. Peter stopped and scratched a long ear NANCY PAGE Meeting Problem With These Potatoes on Menu. BY FLORENCE LA GANKE. In homes where there are plenty of gervants and where the kitchen is a great way from the dining room or where the stove hood is equipped with a good fan, it is quite possible to have French fried potatoes with the fish course or potato croquettes with the chicken. But in the ordinary home such foods cannot be served satisfactorily when the hostess is both cook and hostess and serving maid as well. Baked potatoes are out of the ques- tion, for they must be served as soon as they come from the oven to be good. ‘There is nothing very festive about creamed potatoes, nor boiled ones, nor riced. That brings the choice down to just sbout one variety—mashed. But mashed potatoes need to be eaten soon after mashing. Reheated mashed potatoes are not good, nor does stand- ing in the upper part of a double boiler imorove them. Nancy had found a way to_ have meched potatoes that were hot, had | | i | freshly made taste even if the suest~ ‘were 20 minutes late. ‘ She boiled potatoes, riced them. mashed them, adding butter, salt lml Peppe: Th:n she added top milk, putting ln more than was really needed. The po- | tatoes were, in fact, too moist. She put these in a casserole, leaving enough space on top to take about a quarter-inch topping of rich milk or cream. A few dabs of butter went on top of this. The casserole was set into the oven and stayed there until the| dinner course was served. The pota- toes were piping hot, had lost enough mojsture so that they were of just the right consistency for mashed potatoes and were as white and fluffy as the mewly fallen snow. (Copyright, 1931.) He looked long and at little Mrs. Peter's brown blnl llnna ahead of him. Then “It ceruinly is’ queer, he muttered. “But she can’t suspect she did, I would never hear the end of it. I guess I had a narrow escape.” As for Mttle Mrs. Peter, she was think- ing, too, and now and then she chuckled n{u “The pocr. silly dear doesn’t kno' what to think. He is wondering how I happened to come up here to the Old Pasture and why I seemed to be expectin . He thinks I don't know anythi about it at all, but he isn't quite sure. Well, he'll never find out from me. He really doesn't care about anybody but me, and that is all that matters.” A wise little person is timid little Mrs. Peter. Back in the dear old Briar-patch Peter had time for a lot of thinking, and the more he thought the more ashamed of himself he became. He spent hours sitting in his favorite spot and when he thought she wasn't aware of it watching little Mrs. Peter. Once in a while she would come to him and they would touch noses and he would look into the softest eyes in all the great world. Anyway he was sure they were. Now and then she would whisper, “How big_and strong and handsome you are, Peter.” He knew that she meant it and he would swell up inside, for it tickled his vanity to be admired. He would follow her with his eyes as she hopped away and say to himself: “Fuzzy is a dear. There never was and never will be any one like her. And she is smart. Yes, sir, she is smart.” Just how smart she was Peter didn't suspect and perhaps it was just as well he didn't. A feeling of great content came to him. You see, Peter was in love again. He was in love with little Mrs. Peter. Perhaps I shouldn't say that he was in love again. It really was the awakening of the old love. He had always been in love with little Mrs, Peter. It was simply that they had lived together so long that he had forgotten to think about being in love. And the proof that he really was in love was the fact that for many days he didn't leave the dear old Briar- d (Copyright, 1931.) —_—— Custard Ice Cream. They may be obtained by sending a self addressed, stamped envelope to Mrs. Myrtle Meyer Eldred of the “Your Baby and Mine” department of this newspaper. Re- quest the leaflets by name. The list includes the general foods which e present in the diet of a one-year-old child. Here is a for one day: Breakfast, usually at 7 o'clock. The juice of ohe orange. A helping of hot, cooked cereal with top milk. One piece of buttered toast. One cup of milk. If orange juice is not given in the | morning 1t may be served at 11 o'clock. Dinner at 12 noon. Chop, small piece of steak, fish or chicken, finely cut. Serving of potato or bread and butter. Serving of some green vegetable (car- rots, spinach, beans, caulifiower, aspar- agus, beets, etc). Simple dessert made with milk or a cup of milk to drink. Midafternoon lunch at 3 o'clock or thereabouts. One cup of milk. Two plain crackers. Supper at 6 or 6:30 o'clock. (Depends somewhat on length of nap.) Cereal with top milk. Dish of cooked fruit sauce. Bread or zweiback. Cup of milk. ‘The daily nap should come right after lunch. At 16 months it should not last more than two hours, preferably less. Your Baby and Mine BY MYRTLE MEYER ELDRED. Foods for the child during the second | year differ very little from those foods ! introduced the latter half of the first | year. The baby cereal feedings twice daily, his daily orange-juice, his assortment’ of vegetables, perhaps an egg yolk with bread crumbs’mixed in it, or the crumbs served with his vege- table soup. In addition, there will e one quart of milk daily after the baby is weaned at 9 months. After the first year the same foods are stressed. Milk, cereals, vegetables, fruit and meat. The baby of one year graduates into regular meals daily. At noon he has lamb chop, tender beefsteak, white meat of chigken, or whitefish, chopped or cut up finely | and served with his vegetables. Also he has cooked fruit sauce with his evening meal. These are the changes during the second year. Foods may be offered in | greater variety, and naturally in larger | quantities, but they remain essentiaily | the same. Mrs. H. L. H. asked me to print in the column the best feeding hours for a child of 16 months, the best foods, d the proper time for the daily nap.
