BY THE RADIO EDITOR. much more at home in a bath- ing suit or on horseback, Nan Dorland, actress in many radio dramas and before that many legitimete stage successes, has proved conclusively that she acts as well as she swims. She is now heard in a series of domestic dramas entitled “Keeping Up ‘With Daughter,” which originate at the N. B. C. studios in Chicago. She plays the lead role, the young lady who causes her father and mother many woirled evenings, as well as making them exceedingly proud that she is theirs. Prom the time she was a little girl Miss Dorland has been studying danc- ing, music, elocution and dramatics, building up the admirable background which she now possesses. For a_while she was with the Los Angeles Reper- tory Co. Among the stags plays in which she s appeared are “World We Live In" with Robert Edeson: “Remote Control,” with Robert Frazer; “Fata Morgana,” with Elsie Ferguson, and “And So to Bed,” with Elsie Bart- lett Schildkraut. Also she has taken many varied roles in several stock companies, appearing as ingenue in most of them. Her interest in radio work was de-. veloped when she stood before the microphone of Stations KFI and KTM, advertising current stage productions. She is particularly adept at portraying heavy parts, but seems équally at home ih something lighter. She rather thinks she prefers the light roles, but will not admit either a light cr heavy role is her forte. % :g'cgu m’:;:m mm: G Reith B lessons, by George . 11:00a—8chool of Cookery. 11:15a—"Face the World With a Smile,” by Ida Bailey Allen. 11:30a—"The Power of Clubwomen, Mrs. Virginia White Speel. 11:45a—Stage and screen stars. 12:00m—Don Bigelow’s Orchestr 12:30—Columbia Revue. 1:00—Varieties. : 1:15—Play-by-play description of the fourth world series game. 3:30—The Three Doctors. 3:45 to 4:00—The Captivators. NEWPORT NEWS, Va., October 5.— | The Virginia Commissioner of Fisheries is not empowered to permit the taking of clams within three-quarters of a mile of the shore lying between Lynn- haven Inlet and Willoughby Spit Pier, ' | in the opinion of Attorney General John R. Saunders. ‘The attorney general's opinion is contained in a letter just received by Judge Joseph W. Chinn, commissioner, who requested a ruling as to the com- mission’s authority in this respect fol- lowing a public hearing held at New- port News earlier this year to consider the application of a large number of clammers for permission to take clams in these waters from November 1 to April 1. The application was opposed on the ground that the fisheries body is with- out authority to alter or modify the existing statute on the subject and for other reasons alleged, whereupon the ' commission referred the legal question involved to the attorney general for an opinion.
