RODSEVELT LONE ATODRSWTH e Sheehan Senate Defeat in| 1911 Aided by Governor as Legislator. By the Associated Press. ALBANY, N. Y., August 20.— While | Gov. Roosevelt's call for a special ses- | of the Legislature for the purpo: of dening the powers of the Hof- | stadter Committee investigating New York Oty has been interpreted in some s as & break with Tammany | all, the real break was 20 years ago.| In 1911, when the present Gov ‘was serving his only term in the Legis- | lature as & Democratic member of the | Senate from Dutchess County, he came sharply in conflict with the Tammany ization. Legislature that year was Dem- geratic in both houses. "In the Senate | the line-up was 29 Democrats, 21 Re- | blicans and 1 independent. The | Pemocratic "crganire* cnators were | su) ing the candidacy of the late | Willlam F. Sheehan of Buffalo for the | United States Senate to succeed Chaun- | cey M. Depew. Roosevelt and three other Demoerats, John Godfrey Saxe | of New York, James F. Duhamel of Brooklyn and Loren H. White of Schenectady, s‘eadfastly refus the organization Democrats erless to get a majority vote 0'Gorman Election Recalled. The majority leader at the time was Senator Robert F. Wagner. Daily from January 17 until March 31 Senate and Assembly met in joint session to elect & United States Senator, but the op- position tactics of Roosevelt and his associates blocked all efforts to elect Sheehan. PFinally on March 31, after a series of conferences, (he Democrats withdrew Sheehan as a candidate, and the solid majority agreed upon James A. O'Gorman, who was elected. Shortly after completing his sena- torial term of two years, Roosevelt was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Wilson and served in that office throughout the Wilson administration. By 1920 he evidently had been forgiven by Tammany for his apposition of 1911, as the New York delegation to the Democratic National Convention at San Francico gave him its support for the vice presidential nomination when James M. Cox of Ohio was nominated for the presi- dency. Both went down to defeat in the Harding-Coolidge landslide that Fall. A year later Mr. Roosevelt was stricken with infantile paralysis, neces- sitating his withdrawal from public life. In 1924, however, he again ap- peared in public, lined up with Tam- many Hall, as the convention manager of the presidential nomination candi- dacy of Gov. Alfred E. Smith of New York, at the Madison Square Garden Convention. Four years later, at Hous- ton, he again presented Smith’s name o the convention and Smith was nomi- mated on the first ballot. . At the Democratic State Convention &t Rochester, N. Y. a few months Jater. Smith, in the face of considera- ble Tammany opposition, insisted thet Roosevelt be the conventicn choice for the gubernatorial nomination. Smith prevailed and Roosevelt was nominated without opposition. Since his inauguration in 1929. Gov. Roosevelt has not, until now, encoun- tered any overt hostility on the part of Tammany. His action in calling | the ial session of the Legislature to b n the powers of the Hofstadter | Committee has been generally opposed ! By the Democratic legislators. R R Sl BN Plame Lands on Back.
