VY WL CONTRL “NARSHPBY RADI Utah at Norfolk is Fitted With Robot for Use as Target. Advancing another step in its experi- ments with radio-controlled ships as targets, the Navy will soon have the 23,700-ton battleship ‘Utah mnwuver-l in , guns. the bidding of . stroyer. Interest in this is heightened by the recent failure of the Army air- men to bomb and sink the obsolete | freighter Mount Shasta. At the Norfolk, Va., Navy Yard the Utah is being fitted for remote control by radio. Under this program, the Navy Department said today, selective signals will be sent out by a controlling | ship, using a special keying system and & regular radio transmitter. Course to Be Regulated. ‘The former battleship's course and | speed will be controlled through a radio receiver and automatic receiving equip- ment. An officer on the destroyer will be | able to vary by wireless the rates of | speed and smokescreens and other war- like maneuvers, so that the Utah may imitate an enemy ship in battle, save for_offensive operations. The depariment explained that the controlling ship’s signals will open and close the throttle valve on the Utah | by electric motots, regulate the supply of oil to the boilers for smokesereens and operate the rudder. A ‘“metal mike” like that in use on merchant vessels will keep the Utah on a set| course. 2 The officer of the controlling ship may remain in sight of the target to observe the effect of bombs or gunfire during maneuvers, the department gaid, or he may be advised by radio from an airplane observer. Started in 1920. Remote control by radio has inter- ested the Navy for many years, as the first practical application was made to the old battleship Iowa in 1920, used as a target off Panama in 1923, during Winter manuevers of the United States Fleet. The destroyer Stoddert last year was equipped with radio control ap- paratus on the West Coast snd aireraft are using dummy bombs, while surface vessels bring into play their guns, to as- certain the effect of artillery on the ship's construction. The destroyers Kilty and Boggs also sre to be fitted out with radlo contrcl for artillery ex- periments. Capt. Louis Cukela, on September 10 detached Navy Yard, Washington, D. C., to Quantico, Va.
