The Governor had threatened to follow Murray's example and use martial law to enforce a shut- down if the legislators took no action Dollar Offer Made. An indication of a break in refiners' refusal to hike crude oil prices to the $1 a barrel minimum demanded by the fiery Oklahoma chief executive was seen in an offer by the Cushing Re- fining & Gasoline Co. of Cushing Okla., to pay tha® amount for needed crude. Murray stopped production in Okla- homa prorated fields August 4 and, except for the Cushing offer,”the top price for crude has been 52 cents. Texas’ conservation bill was especially aimed at the young, but gigantic, East Texas fleld where overproductfon was generally credited by oil men as bring- ing about unprofitable low prices for crude. Bill Effective at Once. The bill, which becomes effective at once, was & compromise. Ollmen said it would tend to thwart efforts of Okla- homa Tefiners to obtain Texas crude | without boosting prices as demanded by Gov. Murray. Action by the Legislature followed a bitter session in which a conservation measure was virtually despaired of by independent operators, following _the defeat of the administration program last Saturday night. The bill provides the Btate Railroad Commission, Texas oil regulatory body, with authority to prevent all forms of physical waste in oil and gas produc- tion and calls for a stringent procedure for cperators violating the commission’s orders. BANK BANDITS FOILED | BY COW AND WHISTLE Two Midwest Hold-ups Go Amiss and Pan'enby Capture Sus- pects in One Case. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 13.—Midwest bank robbery attempts yesterday were 100 per cent {silures. In one fistance & cow helped to pre- vent a y, while in enother a noon-day factory whistle proved the undoing of two would-be robbers. At Camp Point, 111, a gunman called at the home of Newton Pierce, father of Earl C. Pierce, cashier of the Farm- ers’ State Bank, saying he intended to kidnap his son and rob the bank. The elder Pierce told the intruder he had to milk a cow. His visitor let him go. Outside Pierce telephoned the sheriff. Becoming suspicious, the stranger fled. A factory whistle tooted just as two men ordered the cashier of the Penn- ville State Bank of Pennville, Ind. to surrender the bank’s money. Mistaking it for a burglar alarm, they fled, but their names as Lester Walker and Paul Garwood, both of Hartford Cit; DIVORCE AND MARRIAGE OF BUILDER PROBED Ralph Modjeski Charged With Switching Residences in Union and Separation. | B the Associated Press. Already they have | made notable progress on a method of | producing in abundance asceptic larvae | of this hitherto despised creature of the | { backyard garbage can—which saves the lives of children and of soldiers. Lucilia sericata is the visiting card | name of the green blow fly. Its larvae generally are known under the less euphonious name of “maggots.” They are tiny, squirming, white worms. Until a few years ago nobody had a good word to say for them, but now they have be- come of great importance in surgery. Discovered During War. 1t all started during the World War in an accidental discovery of Dr. William 8. Baer of Johns Hopkins University, at that time an Army surgeon. He saw two badly wounded soldiers who had | lain for seven days on the battlefield | before the stretcher bearers found them. They were brought in with their wounds literally swarming with the fly larvae By all rules the men should have been beyond hope, but. in fact, they were in | fairly good condition. The wounds were | in no worse shape than those of soldiers who had been treated within a few hours | Returning to the United States, Dr. | Baer became a specialist in the treat- | ment of ostiomyelitis, an inflammation | of the bone, fairly common among chil- dren, which results in open sores. It is very difficult to cure and not infre- | quentiy is fatal All the time the surgeon was ponder- | ing over what he had seen in the war. | He could not convince himself that the good condition of the wounds and the blow fly larvae were not in some way | connected. Finally he brought himseif | to the point of placing some of the little white worms in the open wounds of children who were in such bad condi- tion that nothing could make them | worse were well Cure Was Effected. Since then more than 300 patients have been treated. In every case of ostiomyelitis among children a cure was effected. The treatment also was used with excellent results in the u-e-tmem‘ of deep wounds and bone injuries. What happens is one of the things, the | Department of Agriculture specialists | are trying to find out. The little worms cannot endure light, and hustle to get inside the wound. There they begin to feed on tissuc. Some believe that they eat away the tissue as soon as it be- comes infected, and others that they | secrete something from their bodies | which acts as an antiseptic. One of | the Department of Agriculture special- ists is trying to determine the nature of this secretion, if it exists ! Use of the blow fiy maggots still is | attended with considerable technical dif- | ficulties. ‘There is the possibility that | they will introduce injurious bacteria | into the wounds which they have picked up from the meat on which the eggs Enlargement Leave your films with us for de- veloping and printing. A method has been worked out y which the eggs can be dipped in & Siution of bichlofide of mercury so that completely asceptic maggots are ob- tained. This was & major hurdle to be crossed in the development of their use in surgery since early efforts with anti- septic_solutions showed that they pre- vented most of the eggs from hatching. Seek Method of Identification. It now is possible to hatch them in any numbers desired in any hospital. | The specialists also are working out methods of identifying larvae as mem- bers of the proper species before any use is made of them. Study of the feeding habits of the creatures also is expected to help in perfecting the technique. At | present patients sometimes complain of pain when the little worms knaw on raw nerve endings. The larvae are placed in a wound as soon as it stops bleeding and are kept there for five days, after which it has been found that they stop feeding and prepare to turn into blow flies. In the meantime they have increased their size about 20 times. The larvae treatment, it was ex- plained, is of especial vaiue because of the rapid healing it promotes and the small scar left. It was known to the American Indians. who found that their wounded had the best chance to recover when the wounds became covered with | the worms.
