SPIRH SWINDLERS |2z BARED IN EUROPE &= Trial of Two Fake Mediums Uncovers Many Tricks #o Fleece Victims. By Cable to The Star. 5 LYON, France, July 30.— Human credulity was given a setback regard- ing the efficacy of trusting large sums of money to nebulous spirits in the summary today of a sensational case against two young spiritualists, who are charged with practicing the same racket as international spiritualist swindlers operating in many parts of Europe and. America. ‘The trial, which is packing a_court room here, concerns & young French soldier and his pal, a chauffeur, ac- cused of swindling a wealthy Lyon manufacturer, Henri Bouchard, and a te!low citizen, M. Roche, of 100,000 francs each through the fantastic evo- cation of the cighteenth century brig- and Mandrin. Preyed on Weaknesses. Like typical cases, the two young men were said first to have preyed on Bou- chard’s weakness and affection for a | son who was killed in the war—first materializing table taps from him and then, gaining confidence, bringing forth the bflgnnds spirit, who wrote long notes, which were transcribed on a typewriter. Despite the law’s admonitions, tea-leaf fortune telling and seances with the de- \ parted are still in vogue in France, | though the revelations in_the present | case are expected to curb the exploiters. | In Hungary recent disclosures of large- scale spiritualist rackets, where graft} was done by international correspond- ence, have given a_ temporary seiback to the huge spiritualist ring, which has aow been forced into underground tac- cs. The victims in the Lyon case are | two retired old men. Bouchard is an| uncle of onc of the accused men, Mar- cel Veyre, the soldier, and the foster- father of the cther defendant, Jose Caraes, who was Bouchard's chauffeur. Bouchard related how Veyre, in trances, played Wagner's music beautifully on the piano, often later res ng encour- ing table taps from the spirit of the soldier-son of Bouchard, as well as mes+ sages from the bandit Mandrin asking for large sums to help finance a war against Italy, to conduct researches in gas warfare against the Germans and to finance an underground search for the treasures of the Knights Templars, Joined Treasure Hunt. Bouchard's old_partn whose hobby i< geol: ogy. ped Tn'on the treasure hunt, many milcs from home. Seven thousands in gold francs were extracted from his pockets by the spirits while he was praying, he alleges, but he was later given a receipt signed by the famous eighteenth cen- tury brigand in handwriting, which is said to be much the same as that of Veyre. Sentence is expected to be assed on the two young mediums on ursday. A tight{nlng of the laws in several European countries against the spir- itualists is causing curious subterfuges in Europe. The Viennese mediums are now taking a lead from the psychqana- lysts. They are permitted to charge only for telling & client's past, but they| evade this by revealing the future on astral knowledge, if they are paid enough for telling about the past. (Copyr 1931. There is no doubt that part of the reputation of Paris has its origin_in places where Parisians never visit. For instance, in the Boulevard de Clichy, you have the tavern called “Ciel,” where rather unattractively winged saints and angels will sell you something for one {franc a glass, and next door is “Enfer,” where similar refreshments are offered by red and black demons from hell, Across the street is the Cabaret du Neant, where the staff receives you by chanting a mass for the dead and you sit at tables made of coffins. All this may make Paris seem very wicked, but it is a harmless expression, not of what Frenchmen like, but of what foreigners ip_Paris will pay for.
