NEW YORK, July —Pinancial markets dregged through a half-day | with a somewhat heavy tendency to- day. Losses in stocks generally ranged | from minor fractions to little more than a point. Bonds were fairly steady, save in the foreign division. The turn over in stocks held around the recent five-year minimum, with & twi -hour | turnover of, roughly, 400,000 shares. With prominent traders mostly out of town, price trends were without much significence. It was noticeable, how- ever, that United States Steel, which | lost '3 points yesterday in response to widely published reperts that the dividend would be reduced next week, encountered no further selling of im- portance and closed off only a small fraction. If, indeed, as it has been suggested in some quarters, the widely reported forecasts of a cut in the steel dividend were put out as a feeler for the effect upon financial sentiment, the lmited selling which ensued might convince the directors that a reduction in the dividend would do little harm at this time. National Biscuit was a soft spot, sell- ing off neamly 2 points. Although this company eaxned all but four cents of its_dividend requirement for the first half of the yaar, the fact that the up- ward curve of its earnings was inter- rupted for the first time in 14 years seems to have been used as a bear argument. Miscellaneous issues losing & point or %0 included American _Telephone, American Can, Bethlehem Steel, East- man, American Water Works, Allied Chemical, Mathieson Alkali and Cace.| Gains of about a point were shown by Public Service of New Jersey, Stewart- ‘Warner and Stadebaker. The last- named was helpad by advance esti-| mates indicating that its second-quarter | earnings report will show an improve- ment over the like period of last year, largely through reduction of expenses. Although some of the chemicals were again somewhat heavy, it was reported | that the International Nitrate Salesh- cartzl might be rescued, after its recent collapse. It is felt that Chilean finan- cial difficulties may make an accord |4 with the European T’mp imperative, and save the chezmu industry from a flurry of price cutting. The estimate of the Youngstown dis- trict stacl operations for next week lndl- cated a sharp gain from a week ag Next week's output was placed at u per cent of capacity, against 34 a week ago, and 41 per cent currently. Report from Paris that sterling ex- changs had risen sufficiently to make further gold takings from London un- profitable was received favorably here, but it was felt in international banking quarters that the real test will come | next week. Wall Stroet banking circles regard the fresh drain upon London's gold as distinctly unfortunate, and are watching developments clogely. Sterling cichange on New York was again firmer, but the franc was also in de- mand. cenis a dozen for hennery white firsts and 18 and 19 for current receipts. Tie live poultry market holds gen- erally steady to firm under light re- ceipts, cspeclally of Spring chickens 2', pounds and over and large, fat old hens, both of which are in good de- mand and meet with ready sale. Too many small, thin Springers are being shipped, however, and this class of stock has to be sold at discounts, while barebacks are not nted, and there is little outlet except to the Arab trade. Mixed colored Springers, 2 pounds and over, are bringing 28 to 3. pound and smaller 24 to 26, but Leghorns not so desirable and generally slow sale at 20 to 25. Demand for old hens shows | an improvement and stock weighing 4 | pounds and over cleans up readily at |21 to 24. but smaller fowl moves slow | at 18 to 20, with Leghorns selling most- ly at 16 and 17, and all poor, thin, light fowl is neglected at 12 and 13. Old roosters in ample supply for the de- mand, which is limited, at 12 to 15. ‘The weather continues too warm for any active movement on ducks, and only stoek weighing 4'; pounds and over attracts attention at 18 to 22, all smaller ducks being neglected at 14 to 16. Market for pigeons continues steady llld20 to 25 & pair for both young and old. Vegetable Prices. New potatoes are increasing in re- ceipt and values show a decline at 1.25 to 1.75 a barrel for well graded No. 1, stock, but No. 2 potatoes move slow at 75 _to 1.00. Native and nearby garden truck in liberal receipt and the market is e: and lower on practically ail lines at the following quotations: Stringless green beans, 35 to 65 bushel; beets, 1.00 to 150 hundred; cabbage, 20 to 30 hamper; | carrots, 2.00° to 3.00 hundred; sugar corn, 10 to 16 dozen; field corn, 5 to 8 | dozen; cucumbers, 15 to 20 hamper; ‘eggpllnts 1.00 hamper; lima beans, 1.25 hamper; onions, 90 to 1.25 per 100 pounds; peppers, 35 to 50 hamper; ‘Bqu;lssh, 10 to 15 basket; tomatoes, 50 to Live Stock Market. The general live cattle market con- tinues dull and draggy, with receipts { more than ample for the demand, which is limited, due to the hot weather, and prices on some lines show a decline.
