A CANADIN NOLRY IVOLVES LEADR Mackenzie King May Lose “restige Because of Gift Trip to Bermuda. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. OTTAWA, Ontario, July 22.—Willlam | L. MacKenzie King, Liberal leader and premier of Canada from 1922 until July, 1930, took & trip to Bermuda free dur- ‘ng the parliamentary recess last year which may cost him much in political srestige. At the parlismentary inquiry into the Beauharnois power project it has been evealed by Senator Wilfrid Laurier McDougald that he had gone to Ber- ruda with Mr. King and had pald the 1.9 for their expenses coming to $852.32, thy Beauharnois Co. later refunding the wsount to him. Mr. King, then premier, led the ad- ministration that had approved of the pde of the Beauharnois Co. to divert eno%gh water from the St. Lawrence Rifer between Lake St. Louis and Lake St. Francis to provide 500,000 horse- powes. 3avs King Didn't Kwow. Senator id, a_ millionaire aul Corporation, went vefuses %, mentary committee and testiffed < through an error his secretary had bille the Beauharnois Co. for the $852.32. Mr. McDougald said he was not aware of the incident until the parliamentary investigation had got under way. Last week he sent a check for that amount to the Beauharnois Co. Mr. McDougald, however, emphasized Mr. King was not aware of any of the circumstances. Nevertheless Mr. King is plazed in an uncomfortable position. ~Political op- ponents will say that he took a “joy ride” at the expense of a company Te- | today, after the arrival of nine gun-| celving great national water powers from his government. Mr. King will likely tell the House of Commons about this trip when the report of the inquiry is made. Was Given Stock. Senator McDougald was grilled about his activities regarding the Beauharnois project. He said he had formed a com- pany known as the Sterling Industrial | Co., w7 nad claimed the same rights as thva aria tharnois Co. The latter. to remow the “nuisance” and _possible political influence of Mr. McDougald's company. gave him in return for it Beauharnois stock worth $1,100,000. Although Mr. McDougald denied using political influence in behalf of the Beau~ harnois Cq., members of the Inquiry Committee were not inclined to accept his statements. The revelations of the inquiry are the most sensational in the history of Cana- | dian politics, and Premier R. B. Ben- nett is_concerned about finding a solu- tion whereby the Beauharnois project may be comp wted. The company needs another $30,300,000 to complete its project, and # has been made difficult | to sell more tands after all these dis- closures.
