Gen. 's announcement said the Confed- ‘erate Veterans would not accept the Snvitation of Gov. Sampson of Ken- <tucky. * Gen. Desaussure said the celebration | appeared to him to be “an effort to dis- ~ount or offset the recently developed ‘emergence of a true portrait of Mr. Lincoln which is not at all to his credit and which denies to him the God-like nature and qualities with which inter- Zested persons have deified him.” * This was contained in a letter to fel- “low officers asking their views as to par- ticipating in the celebration.
