EDUGATOR EXPECTS TOLIVE 10 YEARS Dr. Samuel Stratton, M. I. T. Executive, Plans Research During Rest of Life. By the Associated Press. WEST SPRINGFIELD, N. H, July Samuel esley Stratton, chairman of the ExeFutive Committee of the Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nolegy, plans to live to be 100, and has mapped a huge program of research for the next 20 years. Dr. Stratton, who has just passed his seventieth b'rthday, locks forward to the task of taming the Nation’s great rivers, bettering floods and harnessing currents, ‘The former president of the noted engineering institute, now at his moun- tain-top home here, told guests of his hope of developing at Technology one of the greatest hydraulic laboratories in the world. To this end he expects to construet accurate working models in which currents, silt deposits, power and rate of flow may be studied. Dr. Stratton’s birthday brought a tide of well-wishes. His most remarkable | gift was a large red leather volume con- tain'ng 1,000 - congratulatory letters from the dignitaries of the world as well as from old friends. Notes from President and Mrs. Hoover ornamented the first and second pages. Dr. Stratton had other things to say in war and peace, about the possibility of rocket-cars hurtling through interplanetary space, and education. To date, Dr. Stratton said, aviation He foresaw air transportation dis- placing steam over longer distances. development. It is bound to come.” But he saw vast difference between the theory of hurtling from continent to continent or from earth to moon in rocket cars and actual application of the theory. * Dr. Stratton said that directing a | great educational institution no longer was a_one-man job and that turning over the technoiogy presidency to a younger man he was freed for the “equally important” work of direction | of policy and supervision of special | developments.
