ACK SMART traveled far hefore he becime Joe Green of the “Mr. and Mrs.” sketches over the Co- lumbia network. His parents liked to travel, and from Philadelphia, where he was born on Thanksgiving day, 1902, Smart mi- grated by easy stages across the con- tinent to California. He was a boy then and at some 15 schools he attended during his journey he was always in trouble. By the time Smart had reached high school age his family had returned East, as far as Buffalo, and he was graduated there. He also won an athletic scholar- ship for foot ball and swimming, but did not accept it. He couldn't afford to take up art, as he wanted to, so he went into advertising and selling. Smart lost the first job and many others—such as shoveling coal on a lake boat and working in the employment department of a factory—for the same reason that he used to be sent home from school. He finally developed aspirations for the stage, and went to New York, where he pounded the pavements until his hopes and money were gone. Then he | went back to Buffalo and got a job in | a stock company. His first part was a cabman. In New York later he did six weeks in vaudeville and made pictures; spent four years acting in and stage man- aging stock companies; attained a ju- venile lead part in Erie, Pa, and played comedy and lead in musical comedy in various Eastern cities. At last radio and New York called him and Smart started his air career in “Whispering Fables.” In September, 1929, he got a chance to stop whisper- ing and use his voice as Joe of “Joe and Vi He's still at it, and almost everybody likes to listen to his ravings— except Vi. * ok ok % B.
