B—6 RAIL LABOR ASKED 10 AID RATE BOOST Mutual Interests Cited by Milton Harrison, Head of Security Body. By the Associated Press. COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 19.—Milton W. Harrison, president of the National | Becurity Owners' Association, told the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen today that the proposed restoration of railway revenues through readjustment of freight rates presents the only apparent and practicable means of improving the position of the carriers and helping to relieve railroad unemployment. He called upon railroad labor to join with the owners of rail securities and | with railroad managements in revital- jzing the industry. In an address be- fore the thirty-second convention of the brotherhood, he asserted that a united effort on the part of railway labor, management and capital would help bring the carriers out of their present difficulties, react favorably to all industry and hasten the return of national prosperity. Support of Labor Urged. Referring to the united petition of railroads for a 15 per cent increase in | freight rates filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission on Wednesday, | Mr. Harrison urged railway labor to| give the prawosal their solid support. | He expressed the belief that little would | be added to commodity prices if the in-| of our| he_con- | political harassment of the industries from | which we earn our living. The valu has dropped more than 60 per cent since the peak of 19 and dividends, the wages of capital, have been reduced or passed. | Importance of Railroads. | “The railroads present en industry of | primary national importance. Sixty mil- | lion people, through their ownership cf life insurance pol s and saving bank accounts, own app: tely 45 per cent of all railroad bonds in the hands of the public.” | Mr. Harrison stressed the necessity of | maintaining the standing of these | bonds. | The speaker said ‘there are only two ways through the credit of the | carriers can naintained: Increased traffic or increased rates. He found the first impossible while the depression continues, but the second workable, and an effective means of checking the de- cline in commodity prices. | BROOKHART FILES PROTEST. : | Senator Asks I. C. C. to Hold Off Rail | Action Pending Probe, | | Senator Smith W. Brookhart today to the Interstate Com- nst the 15-per freight rates for which ’ g == the railroads have petitioned. He asked that action be withheld until an inves- tigation is made. “This is & nation-wide demand and affects all capital—business and induc- try—in thecountry,” he said. ‘“These reasons demand an investigation of earnings of all capital in these lines for comparison with the earnings of rail- road capital.” —_———— Nearly one-third the barley imported into the United Kingdom last year was from Russia.
