Once it was known as the Church of the Transfiguration, but the more f maliar title has supplanted the more formal one. It is an palian church just around the corner from Fifth avenue, but the corner to which the name has reference was Madison| avenue, at the other end of the block. It was Joseph Jefferson, remembered for his famous characterization of Rip Van Winkle, which he dramatized from Washington Irving’s masterplece, who gave the church its name. Many years ago the elder Holland died. He was a fine family man, and his two sons, Joseph and E. M. Holland, were close friends of Jefferson. They came to Jefferson and asked him to ar- range for their father’s funeral. He took them to call upon the minister of the unnamed church. “I cannot conduct services for an actor,” the minister sald coldly, “but there is a li‘tle church around the cor- ner where you might be accommodated.” “Then God bless the little church around the ‘corner!” Jefferson replied. Jefferson called upon Rev. Dr. Ed- ward C. Houghton and he conducted the Holland services. A lasting friend- ship grew between these two men, and the_church became one patronized by all New York stage and musical people. Br. George H. Houghton succeeded his father, and the association was cement- ed and made stronger. The little church is a low, cruciform bullding in Gothic style. It was opened in 1856. Trees shade it and vines cover its sides. It has many memorial win- dows of interest. Among them are those to Edwin Booth, Richard Mansfield, | Harry Montague, a famous player of | his day, and to “Walter Willlam Griffith, ‘ft:r 33 years postman for Twenty-ninth street.
