' A—12 NEW GASING BEGUN NEAR BOULDER CITY County Thwarts U. S. Plans for “Model” Work Town at Hoover Dam. By the Associated Press. LAS VEGAS, Nev., June 5.—Almost on the edge of Boulder City, which the Government has planned. as & “model” town for workers on Hoover Dam, steam shovels were tearing up the desert soil today for construction of a gambling casino end dance hall. ‘Th~ venture brought to light the fact that the Government, which pre- sumably held all lands adjoining Boul- der City and would be able to keep vice and gambling operations miles away, does not own a 20-acre strip of patent land within a mile of the city. On this property steam shovels have begun their work. Gaming Permit Issued. Simultaneously it was disclosed the eommissioners of Clark County, in which Las Vegas is located, have granted a gambling permit to a group of men, giving them the right to lmud the casino. The commissioners refused to divulge the names in the permit. The operations, begun in the face of a statement from Louis C. Cramton, executive head of Boulder City and former Representative in Congress from Michigan, that he would permit no vice or gambling projects on the res- ervation, apparently were safeguarded by legal technicalities. Attorneys said the Government couid gain control of the land only through an act of Con- gress. County Claims Policing. ‘The gambling halls nearest to Boul- der City are located here, a distance of some 20 miles. In Nevada gambling has been legalized and the State does not provide for enforcement of the eighteenth amendment. While Federal officers of late have engaged in a wide- read campaign to close Las Vegas Euor houses, they-have no jurisdiction over gambling. To this comp]icnted situation Clark County authorities added another prob- lem. They asserted that, inasmuch as Boulder City is located within the county, they still retain police power and therefore possess the right to ap- point all officers. If that assumption proves correct Federal officers could make arrests only for Federal offenses. OFFICIAL KILLS SELF Assistant Cashier's Accuunt! De- clared in Good Order. Road Pay Boosted to 50c Per Hour - By Maryland County Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. CUMBERLAND Md.. June 8. —The egany County Road Dlrectors wednudly after ani- mated discussion decided to pay road laborers 50 cents an Ml‘. ‘The rate for years “has ‘37, cents, the same as the suu wage. The Allegany Trades Council sent a letter recommend- ‘hairmai e i Stakem eoued attention e program for the work of the year was based on the old rate. He sald half the scheduled work could not be completed with the labor raised. Lucien C. Radcliff, fle- publican, said he made his cam- paign on a promise of 50 cents a hour and Lewis J. Harrils, the other Republican member, seconded him. Mr. Stakem and the other Democratic member, Hume O. Annan, made the vote for the increase unanimous. YARD LEVEL RAISED, NEIGHBOR FILES SUIT Plaintiff Claims Water Runs Into Cellar—Seeks Removal of Ground. Charging that their next-door neigh- bor raised the level of his rear yard, causing water to flow into their back- | yard and seep into their cellar, Charles H. Browne and his wife, Ella N. Browne, 925 Ingraham strect, yesterday asked the District Supreme Court for an in- Junction against Marion H. Boswell, 923 Ingraham street. ‘Through Attorneys Burton & Marye the court is told that the two yards have been on the same level until re- cently, when the defendant raised the level of his yard from 12 to 30 inches. ‘They say they have no adequate remedy lt law, and ask for an injunction to pel the restonuon ol the level of t.he de{endlma propert; If the seeping into the cellar con- tinues, the plaintiffs say, the cellar will become damp and unhealthful.
