SLAN PROTESTIG AL CRUELTS Arab Chiefs Are Roused Over Alleged Massacres by Tripoli Troops. By the Associated Press. ROME, May 26—An Islamic move- - ment against Italy has developed in| Palestine, originating when Arab chief- | tains inflamed the minds of their peo- ple with the idea that the hundreds of thousands of Arabs in the Italian colony | of Tripoli were being mistreated. | In the last year Italian troops have made great progress in the hinterland of the African colony, reducing one native stronghold after another..and this may have had something to do|- with the Arabs’ resentment. Telegrams from individuals and so- cieties have been pourifg into Italian consulates in the Near East protesting against the alleged cruelties. In Da- mascus newspapers - printed stories of purported massacres in Tripoli, demon- strations were made in the streets and Arab merchants declared a boycott on | Italian goods. | At Jerusalem the Mussulman news- | papers waged & campaign against Italian occupation of Tripoli, the Ex- | ecutive Arab Committee voted a reso-, lution of protest and a call was issued for a general boycott of Italian prod- ucts. Similar incidents occurred at Cairo, Aleppo and Amman. | Meantime the Italian government, | through its diplomatic and consular representatives, is closely watching the situation. If the Islamic crusade de- yelops the Arabs will not take the | Italians by surprise. They have 20,000 soldiers in Tripoll, as well as air and| rmored car units.
