R e T R. C. M. Burton & Sou, 911 E St. Nat. 4361 Editorial By Joan ! Haenschen busied himself for the next few years managing a phonograph sales department, booking orchestras, orches- trating, composing and directh times he slept. He soon became a nec- essary adjunct to St. Louis social life. ‘Then the United States entered the World War and Haenschen rejected an offer of a commission as leader of Army bands and joined the Navy. However, in a thoughtless moment he let it be | nown that he held a diploma in engi- neering. Instead of going to sea he was sent to Navy School at Chicago, then | Cleveland, Pelham Bay and Stevens In- | stitute, Hoboken. At last he was de- tailed to a ship as marine engineer with the rank of ensign. In 1922 Haenschen met Frank Black, |also a pianist, conductor, composer and arranger. They imemdiately became in- separable partners in music, business In 1924 Haenschen began broadcast- ing for his recording company, then turned more to the studios. Co-operat- ing with Black, ke bullt up several of the most popular radio’ programs. > A 'REDERIC WILLIAM WILE, veter- an radio political analyst, will step before a Columbia microphone May 26 in the role of an interviewer.
