FINANCIAL. " GURB PRICES TURN (DOWN AFTER RALLY Losses Continue Monday :Trend in Spite of Slight Improvement. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star, NEW YORK, May 19.—Weak at the start, the Curb Exchange today moved to lower levels during the first hour, rallied slightly, and then resumed its down: nd, ward trend. Active market leaders, such as Elec- | Citles Service, United Oil, Imperial Oil of Canada and Swift Iniernational, early broke into 4 new low territory for the year or longer. Scores of stocks in all sections of the list weakened early in the session, resuming the trend of Monday's close, *when curb stocks reached their lowest average levels in three years. Upholding of the Indiana State chain o store tax by the United States Su- " preme Court was felt as a market in- fluence :n the first hour today, when Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea common on sales amounting to only 90 shares fell 14 points. Oils were leaders of the decline, with Humble Oll, Standard Oil of Ohio, Vacuum Oil, Imperial Oil of Canada, Cities Service, and Gulf Oil promptly falling into new low ground. Chese- brough Manufacturing and other higher priced petroleums were equally heavy. Standard Oil of Kentucky for a time moved against the general trend. Although further Canadian dispatches fold of the formation of a large pool there to support Dominion stocks, such buying, or intended buying, has not yet influenced that class of stocks here. o+ With the exception of Brazilian Trac- tion, which moved up as most utilities declined, Canadian shares treal Light, Heat & Power drop) [ ?:mu to & new 1931 low. CLEVELAND, May 19.—Increase in the number of stockholders in large corporations during 1930 is cited by Allard Smith, executive vice president of the Union Trust Co., as evidence that, despite a year of disheartenment and depression, the American investor has not lost faith in the soundness of American industry. Mr. Smith gives figures showing that in 100 corporations stockholders in- creased from 5264936 at the end of 1929 to 6,133,319 at the close of 1930, a gain of about 16 per cent, and de- clares that they indicate a probable splitting up of holdings as well as & realization on_ the part of business of the safety which lies in widespread stock ownership. Writing in the May issue of the Clevelander, published by the . Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, e says: “If the year has resulted in dividing the capital stock of the corporations among a considerably l-rger number of people, it may be concluded that busi- ness as a whole is in more satisfactory position than ever before to go forward when the wrinkles ‘are all pressed out of the economic fabric, because of the wider foundation on which business ownership will stand.” Mr. Smith believes that the increase in stockholders not only exemplifies the confidence of investors in the sound- ness of industrial investment, but also shows that a fairly quick return to more satisfactory conditions is expected by the investing public generally. “It is not enough to say that the investor has been widening his inter- est in industry because of his belief in the basic soundness of the country and its affairs—a belief that the country * | will come back to & general condition of prosperity, because it always has,” he declares. “Time of necessity is a factor in the public attitude. If the investor 1‘ did not feel confident of a return of prosperity within a reasonable time, he would be content to delay his purchases of securities in the belief that he might buy later at even lower prices than those which have prevailed.” CHASE NATIONAL CUTS INTEREST ON SAVINGS World's Largest Bank Will Pay 2 Per Cent Annually Hereafter, By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 19.—The world's largest bank, Chase National of New York, anounced today that, effective June 1, it would reduce the interest paid on compound interest, or savings, accounts to 2 per cent annually from the present rate of 3 per cent, com- pounded monthly. This step followed yesterday's an- nouncement that New York clearing house banks were reducing rates al- lowed on commercial and bank deposits by one-half of 1 per cent to the lowest levels on record, and was regarded as part of the campaign to deflect surplus funds from banks which already find it difficult to employ money at gurrent low interest rates. Mutual savings banks in New York “ | City are now paying from 4 to 45 .per fcent. The rise in savings deposits in New York State so far this year has ‘b;elx; 310"‘" than the increase for all of : New York Cotton NEW YORK, May 19 (#).—A further decline of 8 or 10 points in cotton here early today under a continuance of yesterday's celling, was followed by ral- lies on trade buying and covering. These were promoted by reports of a steadier tone in the stock market after an early break and reports of Tains or showers in Central and Western belt sections, but the weather was not un- favorable enough to stimulate any general buying, and the fallure of the stock' market to hold its ralies led to a little more selling of cotton during the early afternoon. July contracts | after declining to 9.10, rallied to 9.29 | and were ruling around 9.19 at 2 o'clock when the general list was about 2 points % | higher to 6 points under yesterday's closing quotations, CHICAGO, May 19 (#).—Unfavorable weather conditions in the Spring crop belt both sides of the Canadian bound- ary checked sellers in the wheat market 7 points in the prairie provinces of Canada received as much as )¢ inch of moisture.
