Assistant Secretary Young of the Commerce Department expects many of the 1920 model Fokker planes which two weeks ago were barred from com- mercial passenger service to be restored to duty within 10 days. Conference between department of- ficials and operators of the planes have developed new maintenance schedules for the 35 planes, and the Aeronautics Secretary said he thought certificates of airworthiness would be issued soon. Some of the planes, however, may not again enter passenger service, although no ban has been placed upon them for use in carrying mail. Faith in Safety. Despite the Kansas crash, which car- ried Knute Rockne to death and brought the withdrawal of the 1929 se- ries of Fokker planes from passenger | service, Young contended no doubts had been raised in the minds of travelers as to_the safety of air travel. During the last six months of last year there were but two passenger fa- talities to 51,482,633 passenger miles flown, and thus far the Rockne crash alone has marred the record for the first six months of 1931. Next week air transport companies representatives will confer with Secre- tary Young and other officials. In July mmulacturers will discuss airworthiness proposals. Mllllon Passengers Seen. Predicting that a million passengers will be carried by transport planes this year, Postmaster General Brown pointed out that while industry generally had been depressed aviation had been im- roving. g , He cxedlkd commercial aviation with ly all the outstanding im- pmemenu in fiying that hlve"been made within the three years. He compltmenud the develwpment of the autogiro and the Packard-] Dlenl mo- tor, which “kept a plane in the air more than three days without refuel- ing.” i'l'he combined mail-passenger-express service, Postmaster General Brown said, was zettlnk much sounder.” “The men who have survived the washouts of the last two years are busl- ness men and scientists, and they are having the advice of bankers skilled in finance. Aviation is becoming a gen- uine transportation enterprise,” he said. In 1928, he said, 53,000 passengers were carried by plane, in 1929 but 165,000 and last year 400,000. —_— SUTHERLAND CHARGE OF CONTEMPT ENDED -| Alien Property Custodian Cleared by Satisfactory Explanation in Stock Answer.
