Reconditioning and ‘inspection of 35 grounded Fokker transport planes was begun today at five cities in preparation for their return to passenger service on four airlines as a result of an agreement reached yesterday evening between Clarence M. Young, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics and repre- sentatives of Anthony H. G. Fokker and l.her lines operating the grounded &ir- craft. By order of the Department of Com- merce Aeronautics Branch the Fokker organization and operators of th planes must guarantee satisfactory mainte- nance of the plywood wings of the planes and modify the aileron des'gn before the big planes can be used again for passenger carrying. Three Days’' Conference. The agreement was reached after more than three days and nights of conferences between Government ael nautical engineers and Mr. Fokker engineers of the Fokker company the operators, which began immediately after the publication of the Department >f Commerce order grounding the planes last Monday. BLAKESLEE, Assbclated Press Science Editor. 8 () —The big bass voice was made public today, and shows it is not directly the sound of falling water, but something far lower-toned that comes from behind the curtain of water. This remarkable sound wave was pho hed by Dr. Willlam Brald White, director of the acoustic labora- tory of the American Steel & Wire Co., a subsidiary of United States Steel. ‘Twice this Spring he set an osiso_on the rocks a few feet from the bottom of the American Falls and let its mov- ing finger of light trace on photographic paper the long, wavy line of sound. Hiss of Falling Drople’s. ‘The “bayonet” points are the hissing sounds of billlons of falling droplets. The Benners represent the roar of the water @8 it plunges against the rocks. But the real voice is the undulating line of hills, literally the ground tone (\; r]:lnnm This is the deepest tone of all, cycles. It has & definite second har- monic, one octave higher, following the rise and fall of the ground tone. “At its lowest this is the deepest bass tona I have heard yet in natural phenomena.” Thunder, he says, is pitched consid- erably higher, at 50 cycles up to 300. Middle C is 261 cycles. The wind moans at 150 to 600 cycles; the surf roars at 100. The 30 cycles of Niagara is little above the lowest sound audible to average ears. st where this ground tone orgi- nates is hard to say” Dr. White ex- plains. “Because cf its resonance I am space between the wall of water and the caves behind. It is not the sound of water striking the ground. ‘That is rather a rushing sound, a great hiss. that is this organ pipe tone, well' convinced that it issues, from the | OFFICERS ARE ELECTED l Mrs. Husband Again Named lold] ot 'l"wentleth Century Club.
