B—10 GRANT WORKING ONNEN PARK PLAN Program to Reduce Cost of P " Street Bridge to Be Submitted Soon. A new program for the development of the Rock Creek and Potomac park- way in the vicinity of the P Street Hridge is now being worked out under direction of Lieut. Col U. 8. Grant, 3d, director of public buildings and public | parks, and will be submitted to the District Commissioners in the course of & few days. Col. Grant explained today that under | the revised plan the double-deck bridge hitherto proposed for P street to take the place of the present structure would be eliminated. The bridge now proposed across Rock Creek in the park road will be appreciably cheaper than under pre- vious plans, he said.* ‘The park highway will be constructed on the east bank of Rock Creek and go under the P Street Bridge, making a rather sharp turn, with the bridge across the creek being constructed practically at right angles to the bed of the creek under the new program. Only part of the bank will be reinforced to make the roadway wider under the P Street Bridge, and Rock Creek will not be turned aside from its course, as pre- viously proposed. Provision has been made for future connection with the P Street Bridge and for a traffic outlet to the vicinity of O street. ‘The park bridge across Rock Creek near P street will carry the park high- way across to the right bank of the creek and thence on down that route to near the K Street Bridge. ‘The park bridge over Rock Creek in the vicinity of P street would be about a 90-foot bridge, and would cost be- tween $50,000 and $85,000, which is ap- precm;lg cheaper than other bridges proposed. MISSISSIPPI BANKS CALLED ON FOR HELP Financiers Discuss State Deficit of $3,000,000 While Governor Asks Legislative Session. By the Associated Press. JACKSON, Miss., April 22.—As offi- cers of the Mississippl Bankers' Asso- ciation met here Monday to devise means of taking care of State cbliga- tions, amounting to $700,000,000 in State bonds and interest due May 1, Gov. ‘Theodore G. Bilbo sent an appeal to State legislators to agree to an extraor- dinary session of the Legislature for the purpose of providing revenue. ‘Threatened repudiation of bonds and interest by the State treasury, which has a deficit of $3,000,000, resulted in the bankers coming forward in an ef- fort to save the “faith and credit” of general economic depression. “‘Our State’s credit and good name, thousands of faithful school teachers, thousands of unfortunate insane, feeble- minded and tuberculcsis patients, to- gether with thousands of State em- ployes, are waiting your signature to the lone pledge for a short session, with mno political investigations,” Gov. Bilbo :;lelflnhed members of the Legisla- re, “I have yielded and conceded until my self-respect will not permit me to concede further,” he con! your signature to this pledge, I can at once negotiate before convening of Legislature to pay interest on State's notes to May 1.
