79 TONGUES USED | IN'BODK OF POEMS Cleveland Language Expert Is Only Man Able to Read Own Work. By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, March 20 —If you un-{ derstand Singhalese—and 79 other languages—maybe you'll want to read & book being written here. The author is Francis E. Sommer of the Cleveland Public Library staff. When he finishes his work, he'll be the only man in the city, and possibly the only one in the country, to read it all. Sommer, the language expert of the library, has spent years delving into modern and ancient tongues, from Bur- mese to Welsh, from Chinzse to Esper- anto. As he poured over the literature of the world, he decided to incorporate the best bits of poetry, each in its or‘g- inal language, in a single book. Many surprising classifications have resented themselves so far. The most armonious poems are from the Persian, Polish, German, French and Russian. Lyric poetry is rarely found in the Dutch, Manchurian and Tibetan litera- tures, the las’ two peoples being so con- cerned with religion that only philoso- phic thought was considered dignified enough for a writer. The Tamils of India have a trick of using the same word to start every line of a poem, or else use the same word stepping down through the verse. Their style crowded out many beauti- ful ideas. Sommer puts Turkish, Burmese, Arabic, and, of course, Chinese in the different_classes. He has trained en- gineers for Russia and business men for China. And women bring in rugs for him fo read the patterns, or ask him to pame their Chinese dogs. HOSPITAL TO SHARE IN WENDEL ESTATE Dog's Broken Leg Said to Have Led to Huge Bequest by Spinster. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, March 20.—The New York Times today sald the late Miss Ella V. von E. Wendel, last of her clan, had bequeathed to Flower Hospital & considerable share of an estate esti- mated at $100,000,000. While Miss Wendel's will has nct been filed for probate, the Times said it had learned definitely that the estate had been divided into 200 parts and 35 parts would go to the hospital. Back of the gift is a story of a dog that broke its leg. Many years ago, it is said, one of the Wendel sisters took the current Tobey, one of a long line, to the hospital, and a surgeon ob]irlnllv set its broken leg. Thereafter the family contributed a total of $60,000 to the in- stituticn. Miss Ella Wendel died a week ago to- ! day. She was one of five daughters and a son of the late John Gottlieb Wendel, fur trader, real estate buyer and pariner of the original John Jacob Astor. In deference to his commands, executed by John Gettlieb Wendel, jr., she never married and tenaciously retained her le real esate holdings, living a s2cluded life in a Fifth avenue mansion. In one instance, he said, | & man killed by another, but the bullet extracted in making the autopsy did not fit the gun with which the man had been killed. An X-ray machine lo- cated another bullet which did fit the gun, showing that the man had been shot before.
