THE _EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. FRIDAY, MARCH GOLD RUSH STARTS | IN MEXICAN HILLS Engineer Says Prospectors Have Taken $350,000 From Sinaloa Field. By the Associated Press. SAN IGNACIO, Sinaloa, Mexico, March 20—Guillermo Laveaga, gradu- ate of Santa Clara University, in Cali- fornia, and once a Mexican Senator, came out of the Sierras yesterday with | a story of a gold rush which has sent | 600 prospectors into the mountains after | @ veritable treasure of natural wealth, A hundred miles northeast of Ma- zatlan, in this province, Laveaga said, 1,200 ‘pounds of gold, worth nearly $350,000, has been taken out of thel| earth and mountain rivers, Sometimes | the prospectors get as much as five| pounds & day, and in some places they | are taking gold out of the rocks with | their hunting knives. | Laveaga, an engineer, has spent six months in the gold flelds. The River El Tambor, 50 to 100 feet wide, with alluvial deposits 6 feet deep, is rich in gold, he said, and the modern forty- niners are scarching for the mother lode, which, they believe, is farther up- stream than any claim vet staked. A Spanish mine three centuries old and several others more modern are within 150 miles of the place. Laveaga €aid 1600 claims already have been filed. He filed his own last October. His story of the discovery of the field i that Heraclio Bernal. a mnotorion bandit in the days of Diaz, used to bring raw gold into the towns he vis- ited, but his source of supply never was found. | One day last Fall the old ‘robber's nephew came to a woman in San Ig- | nacio, desperately ill, and offered to show her Where his uncle got_his gold if she would care for him. Not long after that Laveaga went into the moun- tains. POLICE STILL SEARCH FOR SLAYING SUSPECT Man Arrested in Guatemala Found; Not to Be Fugitive in Patty Killing. By the Associated Press.
