Prohibition will be subordinated to economic issues in the 1932 presidential campaign, in the opinion of Senator J. Hamilton Lewis, Democrat, of Illinois, an outstanding foe of the eighteenth amendment. Arriving here yesterday after'12 years' absence from Congress, Senator Lewis, who defeated Ruth Hanna McCormick on a repeal platform, predicted that neither Democrats nor Republicans would advocate repeal. “The Democratic Convention,” he said, will remit prohibition to the States on the theory no of the eighteenth nmendmenb or the Volstead act is possible now. “Each State should be left free to elect members of the Senate and House on such principles as they desire.” Lewis said he expected the Repub- lican platform to be “the usual straddle on the question, with a pronouncement on the virtue of law enforcement.” President Hoover will be renominated, Lewis said, because of his control of the convention delegates.
