Public Utilities Lead in Downtrend—Favorable News Is Ignored. BY JOHN A. CRONE. @pecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 13.—Initial irreg- ularity in price trends on the Curb Ex- change today was turned into moderate softness as the session progressed. Trading steadily slackened its pace dur- the forenoon session. ivotal public utilities, such as Elec- tric Bond & Share, showed rather poor resistance to the down trend in view of the 1 offerings n the first two hours. Cities Service got down to 17, but this was merely the amount it was quoted ex-dividend today. Specific favorable news in many in- stances was ignored as stocks slipped to lower levels on a light volume of trad- ing. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea dropped 7 points on its first few sales, because the dollar sales of the eamp-n{ last month declined, though the amount of food tonnage handled was the grest- est in the history of the company. Tele) shares were mixed, Bell ‘Telephone of Canada was a trifle lower, while Gray Pay Telephone and others were up by small fractions. Some of the International Power & Light issues such as intercontinent’s Power A, Inter- national Superpower and American & ign Power Warrants resisted profit- taking better than domestic securities in the same group. Rail shares eased, with the single e ception of Chicago, Burlington Quincy. Pennroad met further offe: ings each time it dipped below the 7 Jevel, “‘“’“fiu Sh"e:h Inc., = holdhs( com| spec carrier shares, came within a !:f?fifln of its 1931 low. Glen Alden Coal hit a new low on a few market offerings. Smith-Corona felt the force of the omission of the eommor:o quarterly dividend and touched & new bottom. Improvement in the chemical industry blne tted American Potash, which was up almost 2 points. Newmont Mining tapered as a result of the price weakness in copper, but improved when sales of th- red ‘metal were announced at 10% mn pointing 1930 earnings Teported M Motor, Ltd., caused tun.her of- wuld not be ascertained from the m\mm earning report cabled from London. ———— STOCK MARKET TRADING LARGELY PROFESSIONAL Special Dispateh to The Star. DOYING. ‘The trend toward use of natural gas continues unabated. A survey made w- uhufl that, while new territory is opened for industrial and domes~ tic consumption and new commercial uses are being found for the product, 2% | new sources of supply are constantly being developed and tremendous waste of the fuel goes on. Although the wastage of natural gas in c.m:mm ‘was reduced to 74 per cent ‘| in 1930, nearly half of the !hua prod- uction of more than 554 billion cubic feet was blown into the air. In the Texas Panhandle district alone more than half a billion cubic feet of natural is wasted every day. Texas pro- lion cubic feet Increases General. com) -niel throu.boufi , due pfl.ncl ly to '.helr devel e product for ting. pe line companies are eonunulnc the construction of long lines, lnd it is expected that the big main being run from Texas to Chicago will be in operation soon. Announce- ment has just been made of the begin- ning of work on a new pipe. line from gas flelds in Eastern Kentucky and the Southern pl.n of West Virginia to ‘Washin, D. C., as a part of the Columbi Gu & Electric Corporation’s plan to develop the Eastern seaboard markets. ‘The electric_utilities are making in- creased use of natural gas, according to the United States Geological Survey. Last year the increase in the use of this fuel in the making of electricity was 6.7 per cent, jum&hg from about 112 billion to 120 billion cubic feet. ago the electric companies less than 24 billion cubic feet, s0 that the increase in the last decade h-s‘ amounted to more than 400 per cent. In 11 “Western States about XGB(U miles of new gas mains were laid las year, making a total of 24,018 miles now in use. Hundreds of small cities and towns are receiving gas service and thousands more will find it available this year as the great pipe lines under construction through Central and Eastern States reach completion. New Uses Found. New and novel uses are being found for gas. Garages are installing gas service to be used in “breaking in” the motors of automobiles and busses. Au- tomobile dealers are watching the ex- periments, hoPln' that they may find an economical means of offering cars ready for the road without the present necessity of many miles of slow driving for the purchaser. Less heat and slow speed, without carbon or noise, are said to be among the benefits of gas over gasoline. In Oregon the Portland Gas Utlity planning to furnish heat for a mushroom “factory,” where a gas-fired hot-water system will maintain an even temperature of 55 degrees in a large insulated compartment. Scores of local gas utilities are tying in with the new pipe lines and mixing natural gas with the artificial product. Whereas the gas industry not many years ago was rather definitely on the down grade, it has staged a remarka- ble comeback and now is making great strides forward.
