WASHINGTON. GREAT LAKES MISS WINTER HARDSHIPS = Unprecedented Mild Weather Allows Unobstructed Sail- ings All Season: — By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, February 28—Old tars of the inland seas are exulting in the routing of their ancient enemies, ice and gales, by a Winter of leniency uh- precedented in Great Lakes annals. Mild temperatures and karbors,, usu- ally free from ice this season, have per- mitted shipping on Lake Michigan and some of her sister bodies of water "to go on unhampered. Coast guardsmen, alert along the coast for distress sig- ‘nals from October’s blows to the open- ing of navigation in the Spring, have had a rest unequaled for a generation. Capt. J. O. Anderson, commander of the old Chicago Coast Guard Station at the mouth of the Chicago River,| who has saved more than 2,000 lives in _his three decades of service, sald today: “This has been the mildest Winter on the Lakes that I have ever known. It has been entirely open so far as Lake Michigan is concerned. Freight and passenger ships have kept sailing all season. We have not had a single dis- tress call from the lake since last Fall.” His colleague at Kenosha, Wis., Capt. Alfred Kristofferson, concurred, uym he had never seen “anything Tike_this Winter” in his 26 years with the Coast Guard. Even on Lake Superior, most danger- ous of the group and likewise the last usually to throw off the grip of ice and snow, sailors are expecting the earliest opening of navigation in years. A number of Lake Superior harbors have seen no ice all Winter and those which have report that the bays and shores have not been frozen to the usual depth. ‘The earliest recorded opening of nl tion at Sault Ste. Marle was 7, 1902, but ice conditions com- plled Ifl the United States hydrographic branch offices, indicate that an early break-up is imminent. The expectation of the Lake mariners now is that the flflt steamer through the “Soo” cm-l may be locked next month.
