Prench of Catonsville, HAMMER ATTACKER IS SOUGHT BY POLICE Wealthy Massachusetts Widow Hovers Between Life and Death at Hospital. By the Associated Pres HAVERHILL, Mass., February 26— While Mrs. Clara D. Ellis, wealthy Haverhill widow, hovered between life and death in the Benson Hospital po- lice were seeking to establish the iden- tity of the person who beat her brutally with a hammer some time Wednesday night. Mrs. Ellis, widow of John D. Ellis, prominent shoe manufacturer, was found unconscious on her bed by a maid. There were two wounds in her head, inflicted, police believe, with a hammer which was found, blood stained, in the rear of Mrs. Ellis’ garage. Inspectors investigating the assault found telephone wires cut inside the house, indicating, they believed, that the attack was carefully planned. A quan- tity of valuable silver, of which Mrs. Ellis is a connoisseur, was undisturbed and there was other evidence, police said, to indicate that the motive was other than robbery. They organized a permanent conference to carry on all activities con- cerned with the problems of air traffic. W. WIRT CHELF DEAD Prominent Resident of Culpeper Succumbs to Week's Illness.
