SP ABOLISH THRONES, HIS RING PANACEA Wiener Urges Champions Be Nameéd Only as Great Fighters Develop. BY WILBUR WOOD. EW YORK, February 9.— Frank Wiener, chairman of the Pennsylvania Box- ing Commission, offers a drastic panacea for boxing's ills. He would abolish all fistic_ titles, | at least until such time as some great fighters are developed. “I realize that this cannot be done the way things now stand,” says the dynamic Philadelphian. “But really the champlons we now have are champions in name only. In all the major divi- sions there is only one real fighter among the champions, Mickey Walker, and he never fights in defense of his title. Juniors Are Better. “Rosenbloom, Freeman, ‘Battalino and the Test of them are jokes, compared to | the champions of the past. In the hy-| henated classes it is not so bad.' Benny the junior lightweight champion, 15 a good fighter, and so is Jack Berg, who heads the junior welterweights. They are good, but not great fighters, “The whole fight business is stran- led by the poor lot of champlons. If only could do away with titles for & time there would be better fights. Just look how the heavyweight division is tled up. If all titles were declared vacant and the word was pdssed out that after a year or so the boxers who stood out would be named champions, I lieve there would be some good figh ‘Wants Federal Control. “Lack of _ national control also is choking boxing. I suppose it is unlikely we will live to see the game under Fed- eral control, but that would help a lot. If a fighter was found guilty of faking or any other serious offense he could be barred all over the coyntry. “I made a speech in Philadelphia the other day in which I advocated a na- tional boxing commission. Some of tHe Jeoee said that I had come out for National Boxing Association. I didn’t mean that at all. What I did say was that it would be a great thing if there was a national body with ab- solute power.” “How many State commissions do you imagine would be willing to step down in favor of such a national commis- sion?” was a question. ‘1 can speak only for Pennsylvanis sald Wiener, “but I can Frmm.se that my colleagues and myself would be glad to quit if Federal control could be arranged.” KEELER OUT FRONT IN COUNTY PIN LOOP Dixie Pig Bowler Has Average of 107 in Section 2 of Prince Georges League. NEW YORK, February 9.—Len Har- | vey, British middleweight champion, had Vince Dundee of Baltimore on the floor twice in their first meeting. He hopes to be able to keep him there long enough for & 10 count when they meet in a return 12-round bout in Madison Square Garden Friday night. Harvey, that rare bird, a British puncher, caught Dundee napping and sent him to the canvas twice when they met here a few weeks ago. Much to Harvey's astonishment possibly, Dundee got up and made himself so generally obnoxious the rest of the way that he galloped off with the decision. With a_few more weeks in which to get himself accustomed to his new sur- roundings, Harvey may reverse the ver- dict. The betting odds favor him by & slight margin. Speed! That's Purdue all over again on the basket ball court. Note the Boilemakers handle a rebound that No. 4 takes from the opponents’ basket. Like a flash he turns and whips the ball to his center, No. 3, who often lays back on attack. At the same instant both Purdue forwards, Nos. 1 and 2, are speeding basket- down _their respective side- lines, each having gotten the jump on their opponent guards. As 3 gets the pass from 4 he turns and whips the ball to No. 1, the left forward, now turning near the cor- ner toveer in toward the basket. No, 1 gets it on the dead run, dribbles a stride or two and leaps to ring the basket. Snappy work, fast running and quick, accurate passing hang up another 3-pointer for the Boiler- makers!
