Consequently, in order to solve this problem as painlessly as possible the government, together with the trade unions and other social or- | ganizations, has elaborated a number |of measures directed toward freei | women from domestic work ai | curing their children with neces | care while the mothers are at worl Measures listed include opening of a great number of new industries, exten- sion of the network of social dining rooms, construction of laundries and other enterprises which will free women | from domestic work. An estimate is made of 170,000 chil- dren’ to _be cared for during 1931, as against 70,000 in 1930. The budget for the purpose has been increased from 27,000,000 rubles (about $13,500,000) last year to 83.000,00 rubles (about $41,- 000,000) this year. An official report says that 300,000 women are members of trade unions and that “conditions make them eco- nomically equal to men.” Under the government’s plan 15,000 women this year will be given opportunity to raise their qualifications and 370,000 girls will be trained in factory apprentice schools. The couple had a minor quarrel before the tragedy, he told police, and she rushed from their apartment cry- ing “I will kill myself!” Discounting her threat at first, he said, he later became alarmed because of her high-strung temperament and followed her. He was about 30 minutes too late. Dr. Wiliam H. Park, head of the laboratory, said she had overworked re- cently on experiments dealing with in- fectious_diseases. Dr. Reiner and his wife had been fellow students at the Royal Hungarian Elisabeth University, in Pecs, Hungary. A year ago they came here as guest scientists of New York University.
