SPRINGFIELD, Il February 9.— | Admirers of the life of Abraham Lin- | | coln in Springfield, where the body of | | the Emancipator lies at rest, arose yes- terday to protest Edgar Lee Masters’ bicgraphy of Lincoln in which he de- scribed him as “grotesquely dressed and unkempt.” Among them was Dr. John T. Thomas, pastor of the First Presby- terian Church—the same church Lin- coln attended for years with his wife and family. Pastor Takes Issue, “Defaming our great men,” he said in *his Sunday night sermon, “seems to be a sort of obsession of recent years. None is exempt. Nothing is easier. None has lived or will live to whom one might not take exceptions and in whom one might not find faults or flaws. There is something of the ordinary in | all of our great. They have much in | common with the rest of us. “I have no doubt that Mr. Lincoln sought office and sought it shrewdly.
