Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 9.—The shorts in stocks had the severest grilling today in many months. It was their buying that advanced prices to the highest level of the year, with the average early in the day breaking through the previous top of January 9 and later getting con- siderably above it. The session was the most active in weeks, with the ticker speeding along at_something like its old-time pace. Nearly every group of stocks partic- ipated in the movement. Scores of them sold at new high prices for 1931. Commission _houses reported some in- in early tading. New high prices for the year were scattered ough every department of the list, and gains of from 1 to 2 points were numerous. There was a sharp increase in valume on_the advance, sales during the first half hour, at 500,000 shares, being the heaviest for any similar period this year. Mm;ey renewed unchanged at 1'2 per cent . One of the quietest stocs on the list was the market leader, United States teel, which moved up a shade to 140%. i..;xglum Steel toughed a new high at oo For the moment General Motors had captured the leadership of the list, run- ning up fractionally to a new high. Other new highs in the automotive sec- tion were Auburn Auto, Mack Truck and Packard. In the utilities, Brooklyn: Manhattan Transit, Interborough, Con- solidated Gas, Electric Power & Light, International Telephone, North Ameri- can and Public Service of New Jersey were at new 1931 peaks. American Tobacco common and B stocks were both at new tops, the former 2, points higher. Oils were quiet, only one issue, Mexican Seaboard, making a new high. Diamond Match was the feature of the industrials, opening on an 8,000- share sale and later running to a new high. Other new highs in this section were. Eastman Kodak, Loew's, Para- mount Publix, Radio, Radio-Keith- Orpheum, National Dairy Products, Montgomery Ward, Woolworth and J. FINANCIAL. Now that they show signs of greater strength, sentiment is more favorable to a general pickup in trading and a recovery that may carry the averages through the high of the year, established a month ago today. Industrial List Improves. - il Aside from the favorable decislon on I Saturday by the St. Louis court in the | [ Standard Ofl of New York-Vacuum Oil merger, there was no domestic news t account for the sudden change n sen- | timent. As a matter of fact the political sit- uation in Washington appears to be somewhat more clouded Wwith respect | to the bonus bill and the drought relief | measure than it was on Saturdgy, when | the market had its inspiration from | the compromise that then seemed to | have been effected between the. two | elements in Congress. Altogether the strength and activity today was predi- dicted on a more general awakening to | the fact that stocks are in strong., hands, that speculative accounts have been: thoroughly liquidated, and that | the futility of selling stocks short has finally been realized by those who have been making huge profits for the past year at the expense of investors. American Telephone, Consolidated Gas and Public Service of New Jersey en- | tered a price region well above that reached a month ago. Amusement Group Strong. ‘The amusement stocks were all buoy- | ant. Radio broadened out considerabiy, | with several large blocks quoted a point | above Saturday’s closing. Auburn Auto | distinguished itself with a rise of 6 points which placed it at a level more | than 100 points above the 1930 low. | There was more hesitancy in the rail | list than elsewhere, although even here | were indications that accumulatiog and short covering were under way, with scattered “highs” in this group. Since the market declined to its lowest depths last December the industrials have had an average rally of 16 points, followed by an average decline of about 12 points. Today their average at one time was about 2 points above the previous high of the year and 13 points up from the low of January.
